My little boy Alfie is just over 14 weeks old. I think i have been overfeeding him. For past 3 or 4 weeks he has been taking around 38 to 40oz in a 24 hour period and usually eats every 3 hours even during the night, will sometimes go f during the night.

He hasnt had a massive weight gain like you would expect from an overfed baby, was born at 9lb 11, dropped to 9lb 5 at y days post birth and is now 14lb 6. But i feel like sometimess i force feed him and he doesnt really want it all. Do you just let your baby take what they want at each feeding? Or does anyone else panic when lo wont finish their bottle. I have cut him down the past few days to around 33oz a day which he seems happier with but hoping his weight gain doesnt slow down.

Around 80-90oz.. mad.

I would just follow his lead, if he doesn't finish the bottle, its fine, your LO's birth weight on the bigger side like my LO :) so maybe they are just hungry babies? lol.

my LO is now 13 month old, and has 2x 5oz bottles a day now, so a lot less than he used to! x

ive been the same with feeds. trying my best to encourage lo to take all of his feed. my lo was 8lb10 at birth and on the 75th centile and within a month or so he dropped to 25th centile and as dropped a little more since. i began obsessing with counting ounces and to be honest feed times became very stressful. my lo also as reflux so this hasnt helped.

my advise would be to just let your lo decide when he as had enough and try not to count ounces as long as he is gaining weight ok. i must admit i still do it but i am trying lol.

as long as lo as no other problems with discomfort whilst feeding the wont let themselves go hungry :) x

Kiara has 6x 7oz a day... sometimes shell only take 5/6oz but I let her decide :) every baby is different so I wouldn't worry x

My Oliver has 6 x7oz bottles a day which works out to 42oz in a 24 hour period. This is usually every 4 hours and he may leave an oz or 2 on the occasional bottle.

Oliver was just over 7 weeks premature too so I always thought I was overfeeding him as according to the back of the tin he should have only been taking 3oz when discharged from hospital at 2 weeks old but he was having 5oz which is on target for a 2 month old baby. So I really wouldn't worry. I go by if he wants it he'll drink it, if not then he'll leave the bottle in his mouth and won't suck and so long as it isn't more then 2oz left on consecutive bottles then I'm happy. I did used to panic but he gains weight consistently and is generally a happy baby. I think babies take what they need to satisfy their hunger no matter the amount.

P.S I was told at the baby clinic that Oliver shouldn't be draining every bottle because when there is some left that means he has taken all he needs and he is satisfied, but when I gave him more he wouldn't take no more than 7oz, thats our happy amount, he's a healthy weight given his being premature so I leave it at that for now.

Hope this helps.

thank you for making this post!!! mine is 14 weeks too and me and my husband were just fretting over if we are overfeeding! I went up from 4oz to 6oz a few weeks ago because he was draining all his 4oz bottles and the amount of time between feeds shrank from 3 hours to 2 hours!

He takes a 6oz bottle every 3 hours (which i thought by giving him more he would go longer but no) and he usually takes one at night. He spits up A LOT though. My feeling is he would drain every bottle no matter what so I have no idea whats going on. But if I take it away and put the paci in his mouth he is fine... so we are going to try and see how he does after 5oz with a paci. sucks to waste the extra oz of formula but oh well...
