How often are you supposed to monitor your glucose levels? When were you told to test?

I failed my 1 hour glucose test and was sent to take the 3 hour. Unfortunately 45 minutes into the test I threw up the glucose drink. Instead of trying to drink that crap again I decided I would just monitor my sugar levels. I am waiting for my appointment with the diabetic clinic so in the mean time I decided to buy a glucose meter to watch my levels, but am not sure when I should be testing my bloods.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

my test was high but i was on bed rest so i doubt its accuracy.
i tested an hour after every meal.
i went on a low carb diet (in hospital! as if!).
aet a lot more salads and a lot less toast/sandwhiches as snacks.
combined carbs, protein and fat in most meals.
and it was all ok, levels didn't rise high.
so it think it is a good diet for any one anyway!

4 times a day... When you wake up which is your fasting, and 2 hours after every meal... Your fasting should be between 70-90 and 2 hours after each meal should be 70-120...

It really seems to vary a lot - you'll see on the GD support thread how much it varies.

When I was first diagnosed I had to monitor 7 times a day: Once immediately before each meal, once 1 hour after each meal and once before bed. After a couple of weeks the diabetes MW was happy my GD was under control and she reduced me to a maximum of 3 times a day. I now test on a 3 day cycle:

Day 1 - 3 times a day, immediately before meals
    Day 2 - 3 times a day, 1 hr after meals
    Day 3 - day off
