Was just reading a friend's status on facebook about how her little boy just said a like from a film which included the word "penis", and it started a whole conversation on what we call our private parts to our children. I don't personally like to hear "penis" and "vagina" being said by children... I know they are the proper names, but it just sounds vulgar and not quite right to me when a child says it.

When I was little I was always told that boys had willies and girls had winkie woo's (stupid I know, still makes me chuckle now XD). DH was saying his mum always referred to his as a "twinkle" which I think is quite cute!!! And the common term for it around where I live is either "chippy" or "tail"for a boy and "fairy" for a girl.

So, what were yours growing up? And what will you be referring to our "private" parts as when our children are bigger?

Haha wot a funny convo lol. I always called mine a 'foof' or a 'noonie' n my son calls his, his 'willy' n 'testicles' haha did start off as ballbag but just sound weird lol

and tbh i don't even remember what we called it growing up...infact i don't think we spoke about terms much we kinda did that 'nod' when talking about it instead, but as kids  haha!

When i was younger boys had willies and girls had tutu's.

I think we called boys "willies" or "bird" and ours was our "hoo hoo" hahah I also call it my "hoo ha" right now lol

I'll be using the normal terms (penis and vulva) mostly because kids need to know them for safety sake.

If your son went up to a teacher and said "<So and so> touched my twinkie and I don't like it", that wouldn't help. She'd think his dessert has been eaten. If you replace the word with "penis" he'd get the help he needs immediately.

I also tend to think using "cutesy" words adds to the idea that there should be shame associated with that area of the body, and frankly there shouldn't be. But these are just my own opinions! :) To each their own.

To be honest I don't actually know what a twinkie is? lol (sorry maybe I'm just being thick?! or is it an american thing? :dohh:)

I understand the safety issue, I was just having this conversation with my MIL on msn as I posted this haha. I know it's not anything to be ashamed of... I just think it sounds... in some way like their innocence has been compromised  I know that sounds really daft, but to me it just sounds "off" when a 3 year old says the word penis or vagina :/ lol.

But like you said, each their own I guess :) I will be teaching arrison the real names as he gets older, but not til he's at school at least.

My moms friend grew up calling a vagina a geegee and now her granddaughter calls her geegee cause she can't say grandmother so she thinks of a vagina everytime her granddaughter refers to her ahahahaa

Twinkies are like a yellow pastry with cream filling really delicious :)
My daughter will know that she has a vagina, and boys have penises and thats what makes girls and boys different :)
My friend has twin girls and they know that they have vaginas and their brother has a penis, and they don't go running around saying that lol. They also know that they came from their mommy's vagina !!!

Hahaha, ours were widgy for a boy and tuppence for a girl.... They still disturb me to this day!

Ahhh, ok lol... kinda like a jam doughnut? but cream XD haha.

Ahahaha, the geegee thing made me laugh!!! That is so funny and cute XD

This is exactly why the schools in my area teach the appropriate vocabulary from primary school. My OH is very much for teaching our LO the correct terms and I do agree with him but I do find it a bit uncomfortable.

I grew up calling penises "willies" or "winky woos" and vaginas "minnies" and that'll be what my baby boy grows up calling them.

Knew someone who got their child to call his willy a "todge" :haha:
