On Jan 23rd my little girl was given a course of Erythromicin which she finished on the Sunday night with her bedtime bottle. Since this she is on her 2nd evil bout of nappy rash, well if you can call it nappy rash, its more like her skin is getting burned... Its really evil red and her poo is a funny smell, an off tummy type smell although she is feeding well and is happy. It is also a funny colour. Asopposed to the baby formula poo you get, this is quite pale and everytime she trumps she poos.

Has anyone experience anything like this? She finished the antibiotics 3 weeks ago on Sunday night, surely they'd be out of her system by now?

Im just seeking a bit of advice now as i am planning on taking her back to the doctor tomorrow. I am cleaning her with cotton wool anc water, lea ing her nappy off where possible and using metanium. Through the day it gets worse as she poos and through the night it eases.

Anyone else had anything like this?

Thanks x

Diarrhoea? For now I'd apply plenty of sudocrem until you see the doctor.

I remember seeing a post like this a few weeks ago. Let me see if I can find it. x

Actually I've realised it was your original post. D'oh! Did you swap nappies in the end? The only time my son had acidic poo was when we started giving him baby weetabix. It went straight through him and burnt his bottom. Are you bfing? If you are can you try cutting out wheat for awhile and see if that helps? You could also start taking natural yogurt or probiotics. It's supposed to be good for us when we have antibiotics and maybe the good bits pass through bf milk too.

I didn't change nappies no because it cleared up for a few days then came back but I had stopped using metanium and gone back to using huggies wipes, I always used pampers sensitive on her as a rule... She is bottle fed and nothing has changed as she hasn't started weaning yet and while she is sore i wont be changing anything either. I'm thinking maybe the antibiotics have caused some kind of imbalance of some kind as her poo isn't runny' its like a paste and a sort of pale mustard colour, occasionally its looks greener but not entirely green, if that makes sense. Could an imbalance in her gut somewhere be possible?

Thanks

Absolutely. They kill of the good bacteria in our stomachs needed for digestion. Not sure what you can do if they're not weaned yet, but maybe there is a probiotic supplement or something babies can take. Good luck for your appt tomorrow xx

maybe you can ask your doctor to do a stool sample of your baby. Because to me it sounds like she could have cdiff. Alot of times people and babies get it from being on antibiotics or hospital stays. And if that is the case she needs to be taken in and maybe get another antibiotic for this. Its very contagous too so make sure as a precaution everyone who changes her diapers wash there hands with soap and water. Sanitizer doesnt kill the bacteria. My son had this and no matter how fast i changed his diaper he still got a HORRIBLE rash. This stuff was soo acidy. I also work in a hospital and have delt with patients who have had this. I really pray your little one doesnt but maybe ask about it. Btw when my son had it his appitite never really changed either. The part that concerns me about your situation is that she has had it soo long.

Edit: Also the pic from your first post looked exactly like my sons did

My LO had had the burning poo this week too. Poor babies!!

She hasn't been on antibiotics, but I'm pretty sure hers was from giving her grape tomatoes (the itty bitty tomatoes). I didn't even think about how acidic they are, but now it's got me really scared to give her anything with tomatoes in it. Her poo changed color and became stringy/mucusy and it looked as though it burned her. With her being a former refluxy baby, I should have known better, but I thought I was doing something good by getting her to try tomatoes. Oh well, lesson learned!!

Hope your LO is feeling better shortly, it's tough to see them in pain :(

The rash could be from thrush. It's very common to get thrush after taking an antibiotic.

Thank you everyone. I took her to the doctors but we have been away for a couple of days so havent been able to update. I showed the doctor 2 of her nappies. He was very thorough, took a sample although unsure that he's going to send it off just yet. He also looked at her bum and told me I was doing a fantastic job - didn't feel it from where I was stood tho...

Anyway, he believes it is a gut imbalance, apparently erythromicin is re-known for causing temporary stomach issues for lots of people. He said had she been weaning he would have advised probiotic yoghurt for a week or had she been breastfed, me eat the probiotic yoghurt for a week. But since she isn't weaning and I don't breastfeed unfortunately there is little we can do but let nature take its course and ride it out. He has given her some clotrimazole with steroid cream but she cannot use it for more than 14 days and today her bottom is much better. Her feeding is also improving massively too. She has been having 8oz for her breakfast and then 3 7oz bottles the rest of the day and draining every single one of them. I will be making all her bottles 8oz from now on.

Hopefully this will all be settled soon......

Til then, thank you all for your advice x

My dd has this some times never been on antibiotics she is 19 month so some type of food interesting to see some Lo's have it with mini weetabix as my dd has them and the lil toms which she also has will do some tests to find out what it is. X

Well, this nappy rash is refusing to clear up. The creams are doing nothing for long as it burns through the day and is sore again by night. Eldest was at the dr this morning so mentioned it yet again and she advised lactose free milk for a week or 2 and see what that does. Apparently she had a similar problem with her baby and the lactose free fixed it...

Will update...

You can give probiotics directly to your baby if you're FF, make a paste with a bit of milk or cooled boiled water and wipe this inside their cheek. You can either use opened probiotic capsules or powder though the powder if in a bottle or tub can lose its potency very quickly xx

Thats very good info to know summer rain - they never tell you things like this do they. I mean, had they told me it could do that to her I would have been more on guard and ready for it, and then when I take her to the GP about it it takes three weeks and a poxy convo with the GP simply because my eldest was there to even get told to try lactose free - beats me why the GP who told me it was an imbalance didn't say to try lactose free milk or this paste thing... Grrr they annoy me.

Well, i am updating with good news :) Day 8 of lactose free over, I am finally changing wee nappies and baby poo nappies and she is much happier, still coughing but much happier...

One thing I can be certain of is, if ever she gets prescribed erythromicin again I will be requesting a prescription for 3 tins of lactose free for the flare up...

Poor girly, least she better now (and 2 teeth better off haha)

So she's been teething? It all could well have been caused by the teething then- my LO never had a rash until he started teething, but his first few teeth gave him funny poo and some nasty rashes. Rather than the antibiotics, it's quite possible it was all caused by teething.
