Hi, bit of a stupid question I know but I'm getting very obsessed with the small details at the moment!

I'm very shortsighted and wear glasses most of the time with contact lenses for going out in the evening (not that there's too much of that at the moment!) but was just wondering how I would get on wearing my glasses during labour or whether they would get in the way or even if it would be allowed? Or would I be better trying to have my lenses in?

Any thoughts or advice from you fellow shortsighted ladies who have either been there or about to be there would be very welcome!

I hate it when the world's a bit of a blur so I have to wear something! :haha:

Thanks in advance.

I would say glasses hun, as the lenses may hurt with the pressure of pushing.

i shall be wearing my contacts because i dont have any glasses and probably wont by the time i go into labour i much prefer my lenses over glases

I wore glasses when I gave birth to DS and intend to again this time.
I don't do contact lenses
Wasn't a problem at all

As a wearer of both I would say glasses!

I was in labour for 3 1/2 days! and fiddling with lenses was the last thing on my mind.

You may also get dry eyes due to the labour ward atmosphere which might irritate your eyes.
The last thing you want in labour is problems with contact lenses then miss seeing your baby by not having them in or your specs!!

I wear lenses but I think I will be wearing my glasses in labour, depends how it goes x

haha great thread!
i've been pondering the same thing lately too... i've ONLY worn contacts (never even owned a pr of glasses) since august 1996 and just 10 days ago, i found and ordered a fab pr of glasses, not just for hospital (altho felt that glasses might be better due to possible dry eyes/lengthy labour and not wanting to fuss w/contacts&solution, etc) but also for when LO comes home and i'm up every cpl hours for feedings and so on....
i'm taking my contacts to hospital w/me but will likely wear glasses during actual delivery. of couse, if my labours are anything like my mom's (longest 4hrs shortest just under 2hrs!) i might be able to do it with contacts in! we'll see how it goes and how i'm feeling....
:flower:

I'll be sticking with my contacts. I think it's a personal preference. I'll obviously be bringing my glasses with me just in case.

Mine are a one time disposable kind, so I just toss them when I am done and don't have any of the fussing around. I may think differently if I had another type.

Haha, im in the same situation, just worn contacts for years, its rare that i find a pair of glasses that suits me, but plannin on getting some so they are available for the birth and night feeds coz i can hardly see anything without contacts and cant be bothered taking them out and puttin them in all the time, only problem is I keep forgetting to go and order them and my due date is in 2 weeks so hope i can actually find some in time x

I'd bring both and see how you feel.
I wore my contacts until I got tired and needed to sleep. then I switched to my glasses. I didn't find it that big a deal to do, but that's me.
One thing to consider is to be sure to tell them at the hospital if you are wearing contacts. If there are complications that require surgery, they usually want to know so they can remove them for you. Very unlikely to happen, and the hospitals will often check with you on that anyway.

I wore my contacts. They were already in and I wasn't about to take them out.

i'd say go with whichever you feel most comfortable with, but have both with you so that if one becomes uncomfortable you can try the other.

personally, i wear the contacts you can wear for the whole month without taking them out, even to sleep (i do take them out about once a week, as i feel like i should). my eyes never feel dry or uncomfortable with them in, so i'm hopeful a long labour won't be an issue, as i hate wearing my glasses, but am pretty much as blind as a bat without one or the other!

I'm going to wear my contacts, because I'm a sweater...and when my face gets sweaty, my glasses fog up! I think that'll get really annoying, so I'm sticking with the lenses.

Im gonna wear my lenses, but ive recently ordered some new glasses so i will take both with me. I always wear lenses out and now im pregnant i feel proper ugly in glasses, so im gonna try my best to stick with my lenses!xxx

Wore my glasses all the way through, and through my section x

Specs and i'm vying for the pool! Lol steamy windows...
Contacts will irriate if its a long labour x

Thanks ladies for replying - all great thoughts and responses and I appreciate it. As I said I'm obsessing about the small details at the moment but I don't feel silly for having asked the question now.

To be honest I think I've only worn my lenses about a dozen times during my pregnancy so far so I think I'll try them closer to the time and see how I get on - not sure I can be bothered with the hassle of messing with them and I know someone else posted before about eye dryness with contact lenses during their pregnancy and since my eyes are really dry anyway it might be an issue for me too. I'll probably stick with my glasses unless they get in the way and have my lenses there as a back up!

Thanks again

x
