Did anyone else just see GMTV? There was a 19yo girl with a gorgeous little girl called Maisy...she didn't know Maisy had downs syndrome until she was born and when she was told, the nurse said 'We think your baby may have downs syndrome', gave her a tissue and left her on her own. I just burst out crying...i would hate a doctor to say anything was wrong with my baby then just leave me alone to deal with it. She must have been so upset :( Sorry just had to let that out.xx

oh dead, how sad and what an awful nurse to deal with the issue like that. :(

Oh my god!! Thats terrible! I hope they named and shamed the unit in question!

I dont have a clue how I would react if that had happened to me but after just giving birth I would probably be liek excuse me...say what? Where the hell are you going...

Seriously at times like that people have so many questions that need answered and of course someone to hear their emotions.

Jeeez why become a midwife if you have no heart!

My mum had a similar experience with my sister.

My sister was born with only two palm creases instead of three - her "life line" is missing. And the midwife said to her, "oh thats a sign of downs" and just walked out and left my mum in tears.

As it turns out my sister doesn't have downs. But what an insensitive stupid midwife!

It really upset me too. I honestly can't for one second imagine how awful it must have been for that poor girl. Totally disgraceful behaviour from the hospital staff.

I know its a little off topic, but I was seriously moved by this birth story, about a mum called Kelle, who found out her daughter Nella had Downs syndrome when she was born. Thankfully she was surrounded by loving family and friends, and she describes in all honesty everything she was feeling. I've become addicted to her blog ever since. Simply beautiful with words.

Maisy was soooooooooo freaking cute!!!!!!!!!!!!1

A friend of mine was told exactly the same way, she was on her own as her hubby had popped home, and the nurse came in said he had downs and left her to it. I think its appalling they could have at least waited til she had someone with her.

I saw it too - how awful. It's good she's making it public and the Downs charity on the show said they are trying to train midwifes for this. I really hope they do - it's an emotional time anyway - I can't understand how they don't comprehend what a huge thing they are telling the parent.
The little girl was beautiful and so good on TV!!
xx

I saw that and felt sad for the poor mummy being told like that. Maisy was totally gorgeous!
