Going up and down the escalator with the pram

Never. My DH wanted to do it but I went crazy. He was too lazy to walk towards the elevator, so I carried Omar & he went up with the empty stroller. Would never take such risk.

We are not lazy, we are just being practical.
The wife always says use the lift, but if the escalators is like 10 meters away, why not use them.

Because it is more dangerous to use the escalator - hence the warning signs on some of them.

Are you seriously saying that you are too lazy to walk the extra distance to a lift???
No I am being practical.

Is it me or is almost every post you make looking for a rise from us?
In fact I have said this before!!!!!!!

10 meters away?

Come on! A few steps?

I get the feeling this thread is a bit of a wind up. But if not surely walking 10 meters is easier than balancing the pushchair.

My OH has but he has more strength in his arms than I do and I will always stand in front. If I'm pushing the buggy then it's the lift or nothing but that's only because I don't feel comfortable or confident in doing this "manoeuvre" & truth be told I don't feel it's a thing I could practise at because it is my daughters safety on the line iykwim?

However where I live (people in Northampton will know this!) A place called Weston Favelle has them flat escalators (the ones with no steps if that makes sense) & I hate even going down them. The wheels on the buggy do their on thing as soon as you step on them and if you put the breaks on you get stuck at the bottom thus meaning everyone bangs into you!!!

Even worse - the grosvenor centre lifts! Take forever to get there, you have to squeeze your way in and then battle your way through the crowd of people trying to get in when you're trying to get your pram out. I lost in one day, turned around and screamed 'at least one of you is going to HAVE to get out of my way!'

If I had a choice (as you usually do in England) then no I wouldn't dream of using an escalator.

Out of interest though, what do you do when you use the Tube? As far as I can remember (though I haven't used it since having a baby) not a lot of stations have lifts and those escalators (steep and long) terrify me!

OP was saying the escalator was 10m away - not the lift!

It's difficult. I plan my journeys carefully, and only take the pushchair if I am using stations with lifts (the Jubilee line extension and DLR stations are good) and if I can't do that I either get the bus or carry LO in the sling. It's not just the escalators but all the stairs. And there is no way I could take LO out and carry him under one arm while carrying the pushchair in the other, even when he was tiny that would not have been an option.

Where I live it's easier for me to go up in the lift than on the escalator ;)
So im lazier. :dohh:

The OP usually posts things to wind up, think he's just looking for some entertainment, if you don't want to provide him with it then just ignore or avoid is probably best
Though 9/10 his posts are hilarious.

Personally i've used escalators a handful of times, but only when lifts aren't an option. Never seen signs not to do it and never had people look at me funny.

Oh my god them glass lifts that go to the carpark.. I HATE THEM..Their always full of chav's making unnecessary noise & old folk moaning about the price of something :growlmad:..And you always get looked at like you're an inconvenience..I hate town with a passion LOL

Haven't read all the thread!
I hate lifts too if they're not glass ones - I worry I'll get trapped alone!
Slowly but surely I've overcome it though. In the beginning I used to take someone out with me as I'm fine if I'm not on my own! There are a couple I won't use though but they're usually store lifts. I find most shopping centres have nice glass lifts and that's fine - you learn where they are after a short while. The type I hate are the old metal ones. The carpark in town I always used has these so now I park somewhere where I don't need to use a lift to get out! I'd always rather use the long way around than be unsafe and I've also learned to shop in all my downstairs shops first then go up so that I'm ony using the lift twice! I've been up an escalator twice when hubby is with me. I put the front wheels on and hold the buggy up against me so that LO is level. After the second time I just felt I was so nervous doing it that I said to hubby I don't feel safe and let's not do it again so he doesn't now either. I've never come down, that scares the hell outta me!

I don't even like getting on on my own let alone with a pushchair. Have had to on the tubes a few times but only with my husband helping x

Don't think i've ever seen that before! Either that or i just don't pay attention... :dohh:

And there on the asda ones as well?! Well that is ridiculous, especially considering that the baby clothes and toys at my nearest asda are on the top floor so assuming you've just popped in with the pram to grab something you'd be screwed...

weve got lifts in our asdas aswell, i just use them

xx

People are allowed their own opinions, and I don't think it's fair for someone to have a go at someone else for admitting that they take a buggy on an escalator. I personally think that it's more dangerous taking the baby out of the buggy to go on the escalator, because you should hold them with both hands in case they make any jerky movements (e.g. arching their back). If you are holding onto LO with both hands, then how are you holding onto the handrail? And there's no way I'm going up an escalator only holding her with one hand. And if you then fall, I doubt the baby would get away unscathed, whereas in the buggy at least there is more chance of the frame protecting it from hitting the floor. I would never take LO up an escalator without her being in her buggy, but that's my choice and I don't criticise those that do

I can understand that some of you think it's lazy, but if someone is confident they know how to do it and can protect their LO adequately while doing it, I don't see it as being lazy. I have had to perfect it, because we have about 5 lifts in the whole of Gibraltar, aside from housing blocks, which I don't use. If you have to do it, you find ways of making it safe. My HV, paediatrician, GP etc is all located on the second floor. If the lift is broken, do I just not take her? What if it takes weeks to fix it (which it sometimes can do, here), you would be waiting ages. I think escalators are safer than stairs anyway, because once on you don't need to move, and on stairs you have to negotiate every second of it.

And besides, you can take precautions; you either have someone else holding the buggy up, you take out LO and hold them (as some people have suggested), you put the brakes on, you hold it level so that the baby is not tipped up, you wedge whe wheel right into the back of the step and you wedge your foot and leg at the other end simultaneously... I'm perfectly confident when taking my LO up and down escalators, because I had to learn to be so.

i dont mean to be rude or anything, im just curious... i cant think of anywhere in gib where there are escalators and no lift?
M&S :) They have the little hydraulic lift out the back, but have you ever tried to use it on the way into the shop? It's impossible to orchestrate  Going out is fine, but going in is near impossible. Now I tend to avoid it because it's too much hassle.

Now I mention it, have you ever been on that lift and thought, "why on earth am I spending 30 seconds on this thing when I could just put the buggy down the three piddly steps they have beside it and be on my way in 5 seconds?"

Im a little baffled why people keep bringing up walking the 10 metres, he said the escalator is 10 metres away not the lift.

I have done it once when the lift at Ikea broke down when we were on the first floor. It wasnt going to be mended quickly and we didnt want to be stuck in there indefintely esp as LO wanted her next feed. We do it in an emergency and I stand one side and oh stands the other side.
I think malls and other public places need more lifts or travellators (flat escalators) they are really far and few between in modern society. Its so surprising that some places only have the one lift and then theres people who dont need to use the lift using it or people who dont share the lift properly. I have waited ages for some lifts to arrive they just keep going up and down and missing my floor, its pants.

:dohh: That's what I get for not reading all the thread.

Personally I couldn't do it as using them on my own I do that little panic freeze then jump off!

We have a lot of family and friends in London so its not really like theres a choice when you go to a tube station that doesnt have lifts. I think the people who say they would never do it have probably never been in a situation like that! As long as its done safely i dont see the problem.
