Hellooo ladies, just a quick Q before i ask the health visitor - I have been looking online at whats normal for breastfed baby poo as recently my little man has had green/mucusy nappy on quite a few occasions every day and it said that if it is only occasionally not to worry and if its quite frequent then to ask doc/health visitor about it but how often is often and how often is occasionally?!?! It doesnt state whether its 2-3 bad nappies a day or 2-3 bad nappies a week!!

Can anyone help me out before i give them a call and make an idiot out of myself lol !!!

Yesterday his nappy was really bad - i breastfeed him 90% of the time and give him around 3-4 oz of formula after 7pm at night to top him up when he gets really hungry....also my bf the Dad of my little man is lactose intolerant so im wondering if Jacob could be the same!

Thank youuu :D xxx

Vincent went through a stage a couple of weeks ago where every second or third poo was green. He's been fine but if you're concerned then there's no harm in giving your health visitor a call, that's exactly what they're there for.

That would be frequent enough to ask about; true lactose intolerance is unlikely in this case as you haven't had this from birth (correct me if I am wrong) but what it sounds more likely to be is an intolerance or allergy to the milk protein, it could be that your baby can tolerate dairy milk protein via your milk but from the formula it is enough to trigger off this problem-it may be if you want to continue giving a formula bottle at night that you will have to get a specialist formula prescribed xx

Green poo is also a sign of trapped wind. Abby had green nappies quite often, mainly when she had colic.

A couple of things about lactose intolerance. It isn't usually a hereditary thing, and isn't usually something a child is born with. It often comes about after an infection.

If it was an intolerance of any kind, it would usually come with quite a bit of crying because of pain and also some vomiting and poor weight gain although not always. The simplest explanation is usually the right one, but I'm gals you ae on your guard for an intolerance as it is so often missed.

My LO had green poos on and off for months at the beginning. I tried cutting things out of my diet but it didn't make a huge amount of difference. It happened more often when he was gassy so I think that was probably the main cause. It stopped not long before we introduced food.

Thank you ladies, yeh maybe it is trapped wind ill keep an eye on it but nope its not been since birth only recently it may be because ive started to use formula at night that its upset his stomach maybe i dont know will see how it goes in a few days-week. Would i ring the health visitor about this or the doc???xx

thats a secondary lactose intolerance; a true or primary lactose intolerance starts from bith and is hereditary (usually due to some type of metabolic disorder such as galactosemia). xx

my LO had times where he'd get 1-2 greenish poops a day. This gradually decreased over time.

Another cause can be getting too much of your 'foremilk'. This would be a likely culprit if you had an over-supply issue with your breastmilk.
If you are skipping BFing at night for formula and are totally engorged in the morning... your LO might fill up on the foremilk before getting to the hind milk that is fattier and more filling/satisfying. Which could then cause green poops a lot.
One solution could be to feed LO only on one side in the mornings, then pump the other side and save it for the bedtime feed? :) Use formula to get yourself ahead enough so you have breastmilk to use for that and can eliminate that worry.
Just a thought.

Note I said "usually." A full blown congenital intolerance from birth is very rare. And would have manifested itself in other ways by this point. A primary lactose intolerance will only affect adults.

It could be the change to formula, I've heard a few people saying it has affected the poo as it can slightly upset the tummy.

My first port of call is always the HV (if you have a decent one) Not only will they let you know if they think you need the doc, but ours would always arrange a very quick appointment too.

thanks ladies, yep it may be the formula and yes i will try and express as much as i can and i defo would like to eliminate formula and use only expressed milk, its just getting ahead of things enough to make sure i have at least a few ounces for the night time feed!

Thank youu xx
