I was booked in for a colposcopy after having alot of bleeding on and off since week 4. Annoying thing was that the bleeding stopped for the last two weeks so i thought if i told the doctor that , he might not bother doing the colposcopy and i could get out of it. I wasnt looking forward to it because in my opinion anything that pokes about with your cervix is not a good thing when pregnant.
My hopes were dashed because he wanted to go ahead with it anyway. I told him i was terrified because I had got this far and didnt want to lose my baby through a medical procedure but he assured me it was all ok, then I got really angry because I was told at my last appointment they would just be looking, checking where i was bleeding from and put some silver nitrate on it to stop the bleeding. He then says he might take a biopsy...now i KNOW that they arent supposed to do that when your pregnant because its not safe so i was pretty definite on saying that if he was going to do a biopsy i was walking out!
BUt luckily it was a few minutes of stingy vinegar and that horrible silver nitrate to cauterise the bleeding which was a bit stingy then it was done. I was shaking though! As i got up i had awful cramps shooting through my pelvis but he said it was external and quite normal and by the time i got home half an hour later the pains had stopped. I'm taking it easy for the day and thankfully so far only a bit of black spotting which he said would happen from the chemicals.
Apparently I have a cervical ectropian which is basically that my cervix has an area that bleeds sometimes, it doesnt affect baby and all is fine, thank god!
So i guess wasnt as bad as expected but I'm so angry that he was fully prepared to take a biopsy when i know it was wrong and even in the leaflet I had, it said that they shouldnt do that when you are pregnant. He didnt seem to care that i had been trying 10 months to conceive this much loved baby and I dont want to risk anything.
So anyway, dont want to ramble on any more but just thought i would add this in case anyone else has to have a colposcopy they can know the sort of thing to expect. It doesnt hurt, just is like having a longer smear, and a bit stingy when they do the vinegar thing.
But am so happy my bubs is fine, I'm not at risk of early labour or mc and i can finally relax and enjoy the rest of my pregnancy.
