My Lo was diagnosed with this 2 days ago he has sores on his hands, feet and mouth, he now has a rash all over his body it's quite severe is this normal ? any helP appreciated :flower:

It's the sort of thing that kids pick up.

What has he been given for it?

Nothing they said it will go on it's own , I've been giving calpol as he has sores all inside his mouth and is really upset , is the rash on the legs a normal thing x

I wouldn't be happy that they haven't given anything. I would of thought they'd give you antibiotics. Did they say how long it'll take for it to go?
It's not great if you have to give calpol because of the sores.
My son had impetigo a while ago and that included sores in his mouth. I was told to get him to rinse his mouth out with a mouth wash - the dr said Corsadyl (spelling?). I would try that for his mouth.
For his hands and legs get some Aloe Vera gel - as close to 100% you can get and put them on every couple of hours - it should help with the itchiness and discomfort.

I'm not sure if having on his legs is normal but if you are worried go back to the doctors - they don't mind.

Thank you , im surprised they didn't give anything either think I might take him to the doctor again tomorrow as it seems to be getting worse I'll ask about the mouth wash thanks again :flower:

Antibiotics are only really effective with infections whereas HFM is viral so there is little, if nothing a Dr can prescibe.

HFM is very common and very, very infectious so you may want to reconsider taking LO out unless absolutely nessaccary. LO may not want to eat much either. Just keep the temp down with calpol/ibroprofen and sooth the soreness with tepid baths or cotton wall balls dipped in cold water. It should clear in a few days.

Get well soon xxx

Thank you , I'm in the uk , we will be staying at home untill the rash is better , my mum watched him here so I could go to work :)

Just watch out for any of the spots getting infected. My friends LO had it when she was 2 and one of the spots got infected and turned into an abcess in her bum :(! Had to get it lanced and go into hosp for IV antibiotics.

idk how you are going to get a 1 year old to use corsodyl :\

On no blah that's horrible :(. Thank you for the advice I'll keep checking :flower: x

I had hand foot and mouth when i was a child, i was provided disgusting antibiotic medicine and lots of it. It was green and just disgusting. i dont remember much about the medicine being so young but i know that he should be given antibiotics! xx

That was the hospital who didn't give him anything had to phone nhs 24 and they said to bring him in :( , do you think I should take him to the doctors again ?

Yes you should, mine wasnt as severe as your sons and i was put on a course of antibiotics for 3weeks xx

hand foot and mouth disease is a VIRUS. Antibiotics do not do anything for viruses, they kill bacteria.

Yes, they used to give out antibiotics for everything including viruses and surprise surprise we no have superbugs like MRSA and C DIFF cos we used them too much :dohh:

No, leave him be at home where he's warm and comfortable. Antibiotics are for bacteria, not virus's like HFMD. Unless he becomes very ill like Blah's friends LO there really is not nothing a Dr can do/prescribe. It's not nice to see them ill, I know, but some things just need to be ridden out and HFMD is one of those.

My mum told me I had it too when I was younger around xmas time.
She says I was covered in calamine lotion from head to toe.
I have just got a new Calamine cream from the chemist when Paige had a rash, it lasts longer than the lotion as its not so runny or greasy and is easier to apply.

Fingers crossed it clears up fast xx

The rash on the legs is normal if the child still wears a nappy. And there is nothing a doctor can prescribe. My son's just recovered from it. Just keep him at home and give calpol to ease any discomfort. And prepare for a bad night! It doesn't last long though, only a couple of days

Hi, my lo had hfm a few weeks ago. Antibiotics dont do anything as its a virus. Fyn had blisters in between his toes and then spots all the way up his legs and a few on his bum. Had a couple of blusters around his mouth and a few on his hands. It didnt itch like chicken pox and to be honest didnt seem to bother him, it was the temperature and general unwell feeling that seemed to bother him. It was going round the nursery as ive ben told it usually does every year, the symptoms can differ but usually clears up in a week or so.

Olivia and I have both got HFMD just now and mine is worse than hers thank god! Our blisters are not bad but she has one on her bum cheek that i will keep an eye on and my sorest one is on my butt crack OUCHIE!!!!!!!!! if you look up nhs web or patient websites they all say no treatment apart from paracetamol. Just watch cos the virus lives in faeces for about 4 weeks after you have had it so super hand washing after the loo xxx

Arf had this, he's just getting over it now. Dr diagnosed it as chicken pox, it was the nurse practitioner that picked up it was HFM. He wasn't well with it at all and was very unhappy. My husband got it too and had really bad sores in his mouth. I hope your LO gets better soon, it doesn't take long for them to start to get back to themselves. xx
