Heating pad

It's been a while since I was last pregnant, and I can recall what my Dr said about heating pads. My friend used one in her latest pregnancy and I use one a lot. My lower back has been achey and I use it in bed. It kinda comforts me when DH works at night too. Is this ok? I know hot tubs and hot showers are a no no.
