So Barry is sitting in his high chair banging on it as ive just picked all his dinner up off the floor for the 8th day in a row.

Barry has always eaten anything, and i mean anything!

then about 8 days ago he refused to eat his dinner and off the side of the tray it went, this is now the same for lunch and dinner. My husband who looks afetr him during the day has resorted to just giving him whatever he can get Barry to eat which seesm to be special K or cheerios.

So now im sat with a toddler in his highchair fussing, and refusing to eat his fish and fries and veggies. something that in the past he would eat every last bit of.

so...do i not offer anything more seeing as hes refusing to eat it? Or...do i keep offering him the special K and cheerios?

Edit to add, he is teething right now and although hes not doing too badly with it i wonder if this is whats causing this new meal strike?

Help!

honestly when Zander hits these phases of not wanting but one thing I give that to him but make sure he is getting plenty of milk during that time also still offer the food because he will start eating again :) he has days where all he eats is snack food and all his food ends up in the floor on on his head but then he has days he eats everything and then some but even my 7yr old does this

Lo's usually go through this phase!! especially at this age, so its normal at least!

i would give him whatever he like if he hasnt eaten much today (dont know what time it is where you are!)
But tomorrow, i would try him with little things, a pot of yogurt, some apple slices, toast soldiers, by lunch if he wont eat anything give him what he loves.
Same goes for the afternoon.
Its just a phase, if he would eat anything before, it will snap back, he cant lose his taste buds!
try not to worry its normal im afraid! :hugs:

Thankyou ladies! I did read its a phase and to offer but dont push it on him, so after he took a few bites i gave him some fruit and let himd own to play and off he went completely not bothered by the fact he hardly ate any dinner. He had a slice of toast for lunch with fruit, a handful of cheerios and a cereal bar for this two snacks and oatmeal for breakfast, he drinks water with every meal, and has toddler milk at bedtime so i guess i dont need to worry hes well ahead on the weight percentile lol!

bottom line i guess is that we just need to relax and go with the flow!

At around a year old my son was the most adventurous eater in the universe! He would eat a full bowl of anything and everything I put in front of him.

Now he is VERY picky and eats much less than he did at that point. They do slow down on their eating after a year because they aren't putting on weight as drastically as they do in that first year. And most do go through a picky stage. So depressing when you prepare something and they won't touch it, but I just keep offering whatever we are eating and let him have fruit or cereal if he refuses it all. He will also refuse foods that normally he would eat no problem some days! He is happy though, has lots of energy and sleeps well so I figure he is getting enough! xx

Carter got picky around 13-13 1/2 months and still is now. For example, he used to LOVE green beans. He literally could eat a whole can of them, now he will barely touch them. For me it is worst at lunch, basically Carter won't eat anything other than a sandwich. Tonight he even turned down mac and cheese which he used to love as well. Hoping this phase passes soon!

Btw, Barry still has a bottle or two right? If not, you can get those ensure drinks in the baby aisle to give him so that he still gets the proper nutrients.

Thanks Chick, Barry used to love mac and cheese too and like Carter...threw it all on the floor :(

And kind aof yes and no lol, Barry has a drink of Toddler milk in the evening but its out of a big boy cup ;) we ditched bottles a few months ago and he drinks out of free flow cups, He normally drinks 3oz or less of it a night, today he drank about 2.5oz

I did a lot of reading online, ims urpried as many places actually suggest that if they dont eat to not offer them alternatives because chances are they are full and will eat something that you know they really like just ebcause they really like it (for example if your offered an apple and your full you might refuse it but if someone then offered you a bit of chocolate and you love chocolate you'll go ahead and it eat it anyway)

and that its not so much about them being picky but more to do with them learning when they are full or not because grwoth is slowing down and their stomach isnt stretching as fast as it did.

so i didnt offer him a different dinner after he took a few botes and refued the rest, i went ahead and gave him his fruit like normal, and then let him down, he was fine, didnt whine or anything, so i think there may be some truth it after all!

Abigail goes through phases like this too, I have stopped offering her an alternative main course but offer her normal pudding if she doesn't eat her main. This week she has been so poorly with her teeth though, she has been crying in pain with them and refusing to eat anything, so when she is like that I give her whatever she will eat.

no problem chick! Again its been an interesting read...and learning curve...like i said id dint offer him an alternative and he didnt ask for anything more...infact didnt even drink all his toddler milk so he obviously just wasnt that hungry...we get used to them eating so much in the first year because they are growing so quickly, that when things start to slow down we panic because their eating habits suddenly change. when in fact we just need to not panic stay calm and follow their que!
