Homemade Pregnancy Test using Bleach/Toothpaste? Anyone ever tried it?

So apparently you can test for pregnancy using good old-fashioned home ingredients, like bleach, toothpaste, and sugar? Anyone ever tried these? I'd never heard of homemade tests before, but came across it on a forum yesterday. I don't know how reliable these tests are.

Any recent bfp-ers want to be a guinea pig? The rest of us would love to know if this works! It would be handy for those times when we're out of hpts!!

I'm probably to early to try it (think I"m 7 dpo) but will experiment in a while. Think I'll try the toothpaste one. At least it'll be good to know what a 'toothpaste bfn' looks like, lol.

I saw where the bleach one has worked before. If pregnant, the urine will fizz up and over the cup. If not pregnant, it just fizzes just a bit like a flat soda.

Waited a few minutes and it didn't do anything! Might try the bleach one tomorrow.

I posted these a while back and got scolded because apparently it's dangerous, so beware If you do it just be in a well ventilated area and don't hold the cup (for the bleach one) lol

The bleach one is really dangerous. I DO NOT suggest that anyone try it...the fumes can kill you and it can make a huge mess; that and it's not accurate.

I've done the dandelion test with a couple known preggos and it seemed to be fairly accurate [not so accurate at the very early stage of pregnancy, but once your hCG is in the quadruple digits]

That's interesting about the dandelion test, stucki. Yes, I read that the bleach one us risky. With the toothpaste one I also read that it's supposed to be the milky white toothpaste only- it's supposed to turn bluish and frothy if preggo. Unfortunately I didn't have white toothpaste- only blue...but I tried it anyway, and it did get about five bubbles on it... Not sure if that means anything, though. :-/

Mummy, I think that's what it's supposed to do if you're preggo. Have you tried a standard hpt yet?

I just tried the bleach one too (outside), after looking at some videos of it online - seems to work well for some people. I used about 1/4 of plastic cup of urine and added about 1-2 capfuls of bleach. It fizzed a bit on the top but not much, and there were bubbles coming from the bottom of the cup. I wanted to see what would happen if I added more bleach (think i read that you should put in a cup of bleach or at least match the amount of urine?), so I added 2 capfuls more, and it fizzed up a lot and got a head. The urine changed colour too - to a light yellow. Not sure if this means anything, but it would be interesting to see if it does.

It did smell horrible and made me slightly woozy - even though it was outside on my back porch. But maybe it's because I leaned in close to take a pic. I'll see if I can post it later.

I would try the dandelion test but we don't have dandelions here.. And no cabbages in the fridge either. It was fascinating to see the results you got in that other thread, stucki.

Do you mean you added a big bottle of bleach to the urine, or that the urine was in a big bottle?

I used an empty (clean) detol bottle to mix the urine and bleach. It did bubble underneath the froth aswell x
