hey all :D

just A quick question really as i dont have the foggiest but how and who tells u or checks u to see if ur dilated?

I never could tell myself during labour with my 4 previous labours, but your midwife inserts 2 of her fingers inside you and can feel how wide your cervix is open. It's not painful, just a little uncomfortable.

so does the mw only do this when ur in labour? or will she do it at any of my appointments?

You won't have an internal until you're in labour I wouldn't imagine xx

u only get internals when u go overdue (nd have a sweep) or when ur in labour.
xx

All areas are different..In my area I wasn't checked until I was actually in labour. My auntie is a MW so needles to say I asked her all the questions I was curious about and this is one of them.. The MW uses a certain amount of fingers as cm DYKWIM??

I don't know how many fingers = how many centimetres but that's the method they use :flower:

thanks i had awful image of my mw at my next appt wanting to poke her fingers up there

Your midwife or doctor will check how dilated you are in labour. I am probably going to request no internals this time around though - last time they were so painful!! I have confidence that my body will start pushing when I've reached 10 cms.

In the US, you get checked starting at 36 or so weeks. This varies w/each practitioner, but generally, you get checked as you go along in the last few weeks to gauge progress from one week to the next.

It also depends on the doctor in the US. Mine checked at 37 weeks and won't check again unless I request it.

you can check urself my cousin used this to help her check cuz she kept gettn irregular contractions and curiosity got the better of her and checked lol

When you get checked the Dr. or MW uses sterile gloves because you can introduce bacteria and therefore cause infection so I wouldn't do it yourself. Plus it's a skill that takes time to learn so you probably won't be very acurate, I plan to leave it to the professionals! :p

I agree with this xx

The midwife did an internal as soon as I got there (was 6cm) then I went in the water and was never checked again, the midwife kept looking while I was in the water and could see my waters bulging and I was screaming to push so I suppose she just knew by those signs to know I was fully dilated?

if you're having contractions at home and wonder if something is happening you can ask your husband/partner to check your bum.
apparently there's a red/purple line that rises from your anus up to the tailbone, they say it's like a thermometer and it increases as you dilate more and more.
i saw a video of a birth with quite a close-up and you could clearly see the full dark line when she was pushing.

1 finger = 1 cm dilated... 2 fingers = 2 cm dilated and so on???...so whats fully dilated... *gulp*

dont worry theydont stick 10 fingers in u lol my mw with both just looked put 2 fingers and could tell, heaven knows how lol
