hi just wanted a bit of advice please

i have been TTC for about 15 months now and im going to the Dr's on friday to see if anything can be done for me. i already know that i have PCOS.

i just want to know how long it took for anyone else to get a referal and how long should i expect to have to wait before i get to see a fertility specialist and they get the ball rolling on helping me to conceive.

will the fact that i know about my PCOS already help?

btw i will have to do all of this on the nhs as i cant afford to go private.

would be very grateful for any advice you could give.

Have you already had any treatment for PCOS hun? Like Clomid or anything? You may not need a referral, there might be other things that they can prescribe for you x x

Hi Hun,

Not sure if things will be different with PCOS, but all our tests were done via GP (CD21 blood, SAs) and they were as soon as we could get appointments. We were referred 2 weeks ago and have now got an appointment for end of August for the FS. Still too long a wait, methinks...

Best of luck!

when i first found out i had PCOS i wasnt TTC, so the doctor just said come back when you want to start, but when we decided we wanted to i went back and he didnt do anything just said come back if you havent fallen in 12 months. i knew i wasnt going to have any luck then and i told him that, said that my cycles were irregular and that AF stayed way to long but he just brushed me off.

so i havent ever had any treatment for it, do you think this will help speed it up or will they just try to fob me off again?

Hi WendyB,

I went to the docs just before xmas after trying for approx 2 yrs with no luck. We were referred straight away and an appointment came up quite quickly, within the next month. We has to postpone as the FS said It was better to have had all blood/ sperm tests completed before the 1st appointment, otherwise they would just send us off to have them all done anyway. We went to our ifirst appointment around March time and as all our tests came back ok, I was put on the list for a HSG, which I had 2 weeks ago. My next appointment is not until the end of July, which is a bit of a wait. Our hospital only seems to have a fertility clinic once a month, so it just depends on how many are waiting etc.

Whilst it is frustrating having to wait so long, my feelings are that at least we are now on the road to hopefully finding out what/ if anything can be done to help us.

Good luck, hope you get your BFP soon.

Hi,

I went to the GP after 15 months and we were referred straight away. I guess it might depend on your area etc but they did the same for me as others on here, blood tests and SA first while the appointment came through for about 2 months later. I hope you don't have too long to wait, I know it is a relief when the ball starts rolling (albeit slowly at first) and you are taken seriously.

xx

Hiya,

I managed to bypass the GP as she was useless and got referred straight ot the FS. As we had to have all the blood tests and SA it took us about 2 months before we could have our first consultation. That was about 2 weeks ago and from the bloods (and the fact i have irregular periods) he told me I had PCOS. He subscribed me with Metformin then and there and we have a follow up appointment in Sept. He said if I haven't concieved by then, then he will put me on Clomid also. It shouldn't be too long but depends on what other tests they may do.

Hope this helps a bit. x

Hi hun,

I went to my G.P quite a few times and he was rubbish. Got a second opinion and got referred almost immediately. I had all my blood tests done and Hubby had 2 S.A before we got referred, just to rule out any male factor issues.

I waited 3-4 months on my first appointment, at which they just did the same tests all over again (said they liked to do their own). I was told to come back for a review appointment and the waiting list for this app. was 9 months!! For blood results - i don't think so!

So I booked a private appointment with my consultant which cost me £190, but this included an ultrasound which diagnosed PCOS. I know it sounds like a lot of money, but it saved me waiting for 9 months, 9 months in which I couldn't even try to conceive on my own cause I had no AF.

Anyway, at the 2nd appointment (the private one) I was prescribed clomid for 6 months, and I'm currently on cycle no. 4. All my scans are on the NHS, and to be honest Im not really sure where we go after clomid.

But don't let the doc give u a brush off, esp. as u know u have PCOS already. It's a looooong process, so the sooner u get started, the better.

Good luck

that was one of the main things im worried about, having to wait so many months for appointments, im desperate to get started now!

i think if they told me i would have to wait for 9 months i too would go private even if i cant really afford it, i truely dont think i could wait that long.

My private app. was a million times better than my NHS one. We were given time to ask questions and everything was explained. It really is worth the money.

If I was you I would go through the NHS for the initial app. and if the waiting list is huge, book a private review. My private app was a week after I rang and asked for it.

Hi

I agree with mrs r. We would have had a fair wait for nhs initial app so we got a private one. Went within a week of ringing them, cost £150 and we are starting treatment in July.

Only thing I would say is that I rang 3 clinics and 1 still needed gp ref even though we would be paying. So it might be worth checking you can def self refer.

Good luck!

do wait and see how long the referal takes though, some hospitals seem to be much better than others. I think we had to wait 2 months for our initial appointment.
