It depends on the doctor. My doctor does one between 6 and 8 weeks and then again to confirm proper development and dating - they can tell 95% if baby is healthy or not from those two scans. Then, the 12 week, 20 week and a growth scan at 35-36 weeks to make sure baby's positioned well and not too big to fit through the growth canal. For a healthy pregnancy.
My sister's does one at 12 weeks, one at 20, and one at 35-36 for size/position as well.
I have had lots and lots more to come. I had one at 5 weeks, 7 weeks, 8 weeks, 21 weeks, and then one a month from here on out to make sure he is growing like he should be now..
Usually 1-2. 1 at 20 weeks if they don't ask you if you want the NT U/S at 12 weeks. Sometimes an early one as well for dating (especially if you've had an MC). It does depend if they have U/S in office and if it's an OB or MW. There's no real "standard" in the US. My OB has done one at every appointment so far, but they have it in office and couldn't find the HBs with the doppler, so just grabbed the machine (or the one OB said she just grabs U/S with twins).
I think it really depends on the pregnancy. Some women choose a largely unassisted pregnancy, and may get zero/one scan. I think with a normal low risk pregnancy in a doctor's setting there is usually an initial dating scan when you first start to be seen by them (my first one was actually at 15 weeks since I only saw a nurse practitioner for my first trimester), an anatomy scan (mine is being done at 20 weeks +3 days), and sometimes a final positioning/weight guess scan done before birth to learn if baby is breech/posterior/anterior etc.
My friend who is very high risk and having twins has had 6 scans so far and has to have one every 2 weeks because of pre-term labor that started at 29 weeks.
It all depends on the midwife/doctor you are seeing and the state of your pregnancy!
I think in a normal healthy pregnancy you only routinely have 1 ultrasound at 18 -20 weeks. That is the anomaly scan and checks for growth, the internal organs etc...
You can choose to have one at 12 weeks for the first trimester screening, but it's not necessarily routine.
For me, I have had more ultrasounds this time around than any of my pregnancies. Having had two previous miscarriages (one a missed miscarriage) and an ectopic I have had two ultrasounds at 3 weeks because they were worried about ectopic again, then another one at 5 weeks to confirm, then one at 8 weeks as a reassurance because the missed miscarriage was at 9 weeks. Another at 9 weeks because of spotting, then one at 12/13 weeks because we thought we had miscarried. Then another at 14 weeks to check on the bleeding, one last week for the anomaly scan, and we get another next week because she was being stubborn and they couldn't see all they wanted to!!!
So I've just added that up and it's 9!!! Wow. Huge number. But I'm not complaining about getting to see our Lady Nibbler so many times!
My doc tailors this to the individual pregnancy. No complications at all, it would be 13,20,32 wks give or take. Me, with previous losses, age related issues, and a few other medical complications- it's been 6,12,16,19, and today at 23, then probably 28,32,36 then weekly till birth.
