We're just trying to sort our money out and I would appreciate if some of you Mummys out there would be able to estimate how much a baby costs each month??

OH said prob £100 is sufficient but I'm not too sure?

Depends on how you are feeding the baby.
If you are breastfeeding then that is free at least. If you are formula feeding then the cost of formula is quite a significant expense so you will need to look up in a supermarket how much a tin costs and how long a tin lasts.
Then factor in the cost of nappies, lets say about 8 a day at first - look up how much that would cost you in the supermarket. Add in a packet of wipes per week and a bit of Sudocreme.

Apart from that there isn't that much you will need but you will want to factor in some money each month for toys and new clothes, especially as your baby gets bigger and outgrows all the newborn and 0-3 you'll have got in advance.

its hard to say realli but my daughter went through a tub of milk a week, cant remember how many nappies, 1 x wipes a week, but the major cost is the clothes for the first few months as they only last a few months but you shouldnt b far off 100 a month just try an stock up on a few things b4 baby comes as it reali does help

I started a thread about this a week or so ago as wondered the same thing. Let me see if I can find it as might help you for more responses as well. x

Here you are hun.

we went thru a tin of formula a week so say £8-£10 (average)
a pack of nappies a week so say £5-£10 (depending on brand)
a pack of wetwipes a weeks £1
a tub of sudacrem a month (altho that is when nappy rash got really bad, most tubs lasted AGES)

and clothes, but like sarahtia said if you stock up before baby comes on clothes up to about 6-9/9-12 then clothes wont be to hard to deal with.

i would say £100 is prob more than enough hunnie, i dont think we used that much every month xxx

If you're going to budget £100 a month you should be covered.

It might be worth having a look around your local shops and supermarkets now to see who sells what cheapest and which is the best quality so you know where's best to go as soon as baby's born. For instance I always found the wilkinson's nappies and wipes were brilliant and cheap so I used to go there if we were a little short that month but Boots tend to have offers on baby things quite frequently so if you plan on stocking up there's good. For instance they sometimes have Two large packets of pampers nappies (£8 each) for £12. Just a thought

It can be as little or as much as you make it really. Breastfeeding and opting for cloth nappies will save you money in the long run. Cloth nappies have a larger "set up" cost but then you're set.

I the early days (0-6 months) we spent:
£15 ever 10 days on formula (hungry baby)
£20 every 2 weeks roughly on nappies (sposies)
£15 every 2 months on next sized teats
£10 on wipes/nappy sacks etc per month.

We stocked up on 0-6 months clothes and toys/activity things all before he arrived so these didn;t come into the monthly cost. No idea how much we spend on that though.

From 6 months toys and clothes needed accounting for too.
I'd say 6-12 months we spend roughly £400 clothes in total and about the same on toys/activity things.
Nappies slowly came down to £20 every 3 weeks where it remains now.
Formula slowly came down to £7 every day days before he moved to cows milk completely at a year
Wipes etc and toiletteries are still about £10 a month - he needs toothpaste etc now
He gets through 2 cups a month as he chews the spout (little sod)
He has about £15 a week on his own special foods that only he eats (formage frais, certain fruit etc) but otherwise for the most part eats what we have (we did BLW)
About £15 a week for activities - swimming, soft play etc

From a year each size of clothes is more expensive and they need things like proper shoes which is pricey. We spent about £500 total for 12-18 months... but I fell out of teh habit of looking for bargains really.

You can save money buy buying things a year ahead in the sales. We only thought to do that in the past sales but got some epic bargains for Fin and the new baby for next winter.

Hope that helps xx

Kitty, that's a great description, thanks!
I'm not sure we'll be spending that much on clothes (hoping for lots of handmedowns) but I have a feeling there will be lots of extra needs/wants past the initial setup such as furniture (e.g. a travel cot, gates etc.), a sling, bouncer, playmat, bath equipment, the cost of extra laundry, activities and playgroups, coffees out with the yummy mummies...

I'm thinking that £100 is a good start depending on nappy/feeding plans but if you want to be out and about you will need a social budget, too. Plus a contingency for larger items.

I haven't had my first baby yet so I might be completely wrong :haha:
