Hi ladies. I had a loss recently and I would have been 17 or so weeks pregnant.. I would have been in the second tri . Anyway, I had a d and c 7 weeks ago I believe. I went to get a copper iud a few weeks ago and the doctor said pregnancy test was positive. I knew I wasn't pregnant because I had been careful. So, she ordered a blood test to be make sure my hcg wasn't doubling because she assumed that the hcg was just still in my body from my loss.. My first hcg blood test was 20 and two days later it was 17. My doctor said it would be okay for me to get an iud since I was obviously not pregnant. So, I got my iud not long ago. I can't remember exactly, maybe 2 weeks ago or maybe not even that long ago. Anyway.. I have a copper IUD but I just bought my friend some pregnancy tests and I took one for fun because they were cheap and it came up positive. I'm wondering what opinions you ladies have on this. If my hcg level was 17 a few weeks ago from a loss I had 7 weeks ago and I have an IUD, why would I have a positive pregnancy test now??

I remember you! I can't answer this because I have no idea, but I'm so sorry for your loss. :( I didn't know about it until just now, I must have left the first tri section before you.

I hope you get your answer to this question. :hugs:

I remember you too. I'd definitely be back at the doctors asking to know why and getting some reassurance. Do let us know how you get on.

Thank you. It's very stressful. I wasn't expecting this at all. I shouldn't be pregnant for so many reasons. I just had a d and c, had a period 2 and a half weeks ago and I have an IUD.

I remember you. I too did not know of your loss as I would have moved over before you.

I am so so sorry for your loss. Could you ask for an u/s because of your positive tests?

Thanks ladies. I don't know what to do. I don't want to be pregnant. I just had a loss and I'm not ready.

I'm so v sorry for your loss xxxxxxx when I had my second mc of last yr in September it actually took me until the end of Nov to get a negative pregnancy test, I have no idea why the hcg took so long to leave my body, I'd had two periods by that point too. It was v upsetting to see a positive so long. I don't think it's usual to have that happen and usually the hcg would have been gone by then. I was relieved to finally get a negative at the end of Nov as it felt I could at last try to move on, we never ever get over our losses but we learn to move forward, sending you lots luv. Xxxxxxxxxx

I'm sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing that. It makes me feel better. My bloods came back at 17 a few weeks ago. How could I still show a positive? How much hcg does a hpt detect?

I remember you also and while i have no advice i hope you get the outcome you want :hugs:

So sorry for your loss hun.*hugs* Did you find out the reason for it? The only reason im asking is because I had a partial molar pregnancy that I lost at 23 weeks and that can cause you to have hcg still if there was even a tiny piece of placental tissue left inside. Xxx

Pinkie I remember you too!

A lot hpt detect as little as 10 miu/l. I would go back to you dr and ask for a scan. It could be that a little piece of tissue was left behind after the d&c and is still producing small amounts of hcg.

HPTs vary in how much HCG they detect. The super sensitive tests start at 10miu, you can get 20miu, 25miu, 50miu. All depends on the brand and test.

Could it be possible that you have retained placenta or something keeping your HCG up? I'd go and see a dr. x

I hope that's all it is. I thought caused infection though?

In my case I did have a tiny piece of retained tissue, it was so small there was more risk of doing surgery and missing it than to let nature take its course, it never caused an infection with me and as I said it took a long time for the hcg to leave my body, I did keep informing the health care professionals but I was never given any treatment and eventually after two periods it did pass, I didn't get any of the bleeding associated with retained tissue and just had two normal periods, it never bothered me other than that it was upsetting seeing positive hpt so long, eventually the tests got lighter and lighter until I received a neg. I was v lucky to fall again in January and so far everything is ok, it can be diagnosed via scan as mine was so if you are worried you could ask for a scan to double check. Wishing you lots luv xxxxx

All in all I thin kyou do need to see a doctor, it might be advisable to have bloods and perhaps a scan done too to figure out why you are getting positives. 7 weeks ago is a long time now.

Hi Pinkie I remember you. I just wanted to say I'm so sorry and that I send my thoughts your way. *hugs*

I remember you, too, and so glad to see a post from you! I am so sorry for your loss.

I lost a baby at 16.5 weeks a few years ago, and after delivering her I had to have a D&C because the placenta wouldn't release. I had betas done about 4-6 weeks later and my hcg was down to <5 (not pregnant) by then. I would definitely call the doctor and request testing to make sure there is no retained tissue.

I am sorry you are still having to deal with this. Big hugs to you!

I called and talked to the nurse because my doctor isn't in. My nurse said my levels were 23 on May 23rd and 18 on May 25th- that was the day my period started.. So, my levels were already very low 2 weeks ago. The nurse is very confused and said shed talk to the doctor on call to have me come in later today. I can't imagine why I'd have a positive pregnancy test! It must be meant to be that my best friend asked me to buy pregnancy tests for me last night and for some reason I felt like taking one. I don't feel pregnant. I just did one for fun and my friends ended up being negative and mine positive. She's the one who feels pregnant and thinks she is!

Also, my nurse called back and said the doctor on call wants me to wait a week and take anther test. I am not okay with this because if I am pregnant with an IUD, that's dangerous.

What should I do? Should I wait a week and take another test like the doctor said, or demand to be seen since its dangerous to be pregnant with an IUD?
