Hi Ladies,

Would like some stories, advice, cautionary tales from those of you who have experienced induction.

My waters broke on Monday at 2am... I have till tomorrow at 8am to go into established labour by myself or I face the dreaded (is it really?) induction.

And despite my best efforts my body can only give me good contractions that are about 5 mins apart for 45 mins then they stop.. for no reason...

So I'm now mentally and physically preparing myself for having to go in for induction... this is my first so I have no idea what they do etc..

So.. what do they do??? What should I be prepared for? Do I need to take anything different with me? What will OH be doing/ be allowed to do/stay?? Do I take all my bags in with me??

I know each hospital will be different but a heads up on the basics would be awesome (and will help me sleep tonight)

Last but not least.. has anyone given birth or know anyone who has given birth at Lewisham hospital... I was prepped for the new birth centre but now have to go to Labour Ward... the experience this morning has put me in a bad place so would like some re-assurance that I just got a crabby midwife and they're not all that bad!!!

Thank you so much in advance for any help, advice or stories you can offer.

Sorry cant really offer advice as my induction was with my angel baby, hope it goes well :hugs: xx

Hi hon, this is my first so no idea about induction but I am open to whatever they think needs to be done. I am having bub at Queen Mary's in Sidcup but I do know Lewisham hospital and they are supposed to be very good there. I'm sure they will take great care of you. Good luck and remember either way, bub will be here very soon now! x

I'm having mine next week so i'm wondering about it too x

I was induced with both my kids. They started the IV lines as soon as I got there. With my daughter, the contractions got regular within the hour and my water broke. I gave birth 10 hours later, no epidural. My son, they broke my water at the same time as starting the IV. He was born 9 hours and 45 mins later and was also no epidural. I had an episiotomy (sp?) with my daughter, which was much more common 15 years ago. Ended up with 13 stitches, but healed just fine. With my son, I ended up with one little stitch from a tiny tear. No big deal. I had ok experiences both times. I hated the IV, but I didn't have much choice.

I'm hoping then as my waters have already gone that it'll be IV line in ASAP and then just waiting for it to work :)

Best of luck and try not to worry! You'll do great!!

One thing i would say is that induction hurts, alot - as it's fake labour essentially. So, keep an open mind and go with flow with pain relief.

All labour hurts. Labour is labour, regardless of how it comes to be.

Ive only been in labour oce (induced) so I cant compare it. Yeah it hurts but I didnt think it was too bad I have to be honest... I had to have Syntocinon to speed my contractions up which made them more painful and I wasnt induced with an IV I had a pessary inserted which kicked my contractions off after only a couple of hours which considering my cervix wasnt at all 'favourable' was pretty good!

You will be fine, you just need to think that every contraction is one pain closer to you having your baby xx

Hopefully she won't be on duty when you give birth! xx

Of course, i think we all know that :)

Thought I should clarify considering your "fake labour" comment. :)

What i mean't by the fake labour comment is that induction means your labour is artificially started. I had an induction and the MW told me it hurt so much because it was 'essentially fake labour' :D

I just think its difficult to justify one labour being more painful than another, especially strictly based on how it began (either naturally or induced). There are lots of women who will take pain relief and lots that won't.......I really don't think an induction has bearing on it. :)

Of course, and i agree with you. However OP asked for our personal experiences and that was mine.

HI
I was induced last wednesday. Had pessary x 2 and prostin pains were horrendous but as your waters have already broke (mine hadnt) i hope you wont have to experience that. My waters broke spontaneously 11 hours after second pessary and then contractions started immediately. They only gave me paracetemol with prostin pains and refused me other pain relief until i went down to labour suite where i begged for an epidural!! Im no martyr to pain lol.

Good luck - im sure you will have a competely different experience as your body has already started stuff off xx
