I just came across this article and was wondering what you all think?

https://newamericamedia.org/2010/08...ians-flock-to-sex-selection-clinics-in-us.php

I can't believe people are ready to spend thousands of dollars to have a baby of a particular gender. I understand if people try natural methods for sex selection. But IVF and then discarding embryos of the "unwanted" sex?

I am embarrassed to say I am of south asian origin :( I thought all babies were blessings? All I want is a healthy baby - boy or girl, I will accept him/her with open arms.

Waddya all think?

It is not good to "throw away" potential babies. However, I can understand some couples' desire to want a particular gender after having the same gender over and over. This does not justify throwing away unwanted embryos though. Gender selection is a cool idea if you ask me but the discarding of embryos just sounds bad. I think being able to select isn't so bad though. Now don't misunderstand me because I (personally) would take a boy or girl happily as long as it is healthy.

Its true that parents do have gender preferences, especially if they have one or more kids of the same gender.
But it still saddens me that the unwanted gender is discarded. In one sense, maybe it is better than infanticide. I dunno, the article still distressed me. There are lot of childless couples who need a baby - any baby. IVF clinics should be focusing on them, rather than trying to make "designer babies". I guess its all a question of money for the clinics.

surely a fertilsed embryo is a baby in my eyes.......
i cant totally understand ivf for people who cant have kids without it but disgarding embroyos to want boy or girl is disgusting x
