internal exams..?

Hi ladies,

just had a quick question about internal exams that mw carries out, and sweeps etc...

how far along do u have to be before they do that, im full term today and my next app with mw is 38+2d...will she want to do an internal examination...or do they wait til ur past due date b4 faffin about down there? lol x

I didnt have any internals until i went into labour at 39+4 even then i was surprised how little they check you down there.... not that i'm complaining!!!

In the UK I don't think they do any internal exams, I haven't had any by my midwife at appointments.
They will only give you a sweep if you are over 40 weeks, but it's down to the individual midwife if they do it or not, my friend was refused one when she was 40+6 but my midwife said she would do one at 40+3 for me

you dont tend to get internals until in labour and thats just to see how far dilated you are and when you can push... you will be offered a sweep tho usually a week or 2 after your due date

I have been getting checked since 36 weeks, my doctor checks to see if my cervix is still closed. I asked for a sweep yesterday i am over 39 weeks and he couldnt do it, he can only do it if cervix is open.

ahh...i see ur in canada...i fink there are different policies in the uk according to the ladies here,we dont get checked until labour x

Oh, gosh. I wish they did here! I had my first one at 37 weeks and get them weekly until the birth. They HURT!!

I got checked at 30+5 (preterm labor), then again at like 34 weeks (false labor), and from that I got checked weekly...bc at 30+5 I dilated to 1cm, at the next time I was 3cm and remained that way til 37+6 when I went into labor (5cm, 90% effaced). But I was high risk on top of the other issues, but normally here they start checking you weekly starting at 37 wks.
