ok my docs are crap and i got three diff midwife numbers and each one is always a voicemail directing me to the next person ive never once been able to get hold of em on the phone since being pregnant my bloods came back 2 weeks ago saying i need iron my levels were 9.5 can i just buy the bloody things in the health shop? is it the same thing or do i need prescription ones? x

that is really bad, i can't understand why the wouldn't have advised you on what to take when they reviewed your results.

most people with low iron have been prescribed ferrous fumarate 210mg three times a day. I am sure you could get the same from the chemist etc.

if you feel ill on the tablets (they upset some peoples stomach) there is spatone liquid. That would be a more expensive way to do it though and my gp assured me it's no more effective than tabs.

I have only really been taking 2 a day but in 7 weeks my iron went up by 2.4 and ferritin by 21.

i feel a lot better than before.

i just got a letter couple weeks ago with results then saying contact your midiwife for iron thanks for the advise ill go in the chemist and ask hopefully be able to just buy it x

i would take ur letter down to the drs and ask for a prescription to be made right away..

when i got told i had low iron by the midwife.. i had to phone my drs and tell them i needed the tablets.. the midwife had sent a fax over to them to let them no what dose i need to be on and what my iron levels were..

you need to get on ur iron supplements pretty quick cause it takes like a month to move ur iron up by 1 whole point.. you will need to keep taking them until youve given birth cause will lose some blood when ur in labour.. which can lower ya iron back down..

cant believe u got ur results 2 weeks ago and u still aint got the tablets.. im on ferrus fumarate.. 210mg x3 a day.. xx

oooh right well i better get down the docs then and nag them gotta get this sorted! x

yeah you need too.. you shouldnt have to mither them.. but some drs dont have a clue what day it is mosta the time lol :| ..

takes quite a while for the iron to kick in ya see.. so by the time ur ready to give birth ur iron levels should be better..

take the tablets with pure fresh orange juice too :) it helps absorb the iron quicker.. xx

Cath I reckon your gp wants his share from the iron tablets supplier. :winkwink: 4 weeks on tablets last pregnancy did zero for my iron levels. 2 weeks on spatone brought them up well into normal.

well i finally got hold of a midiwfe and she told me to make appt with doctor so finally got appt for friday bout bloody time! x

I heard that too. mw reckons they are more effective than tablets. You can get them cheaper on amazon.

I tried spatone, was taking twice a day woth pure orange but all it did was stop my HB level falling any further so I'm sticking with the tablets, just a shame about the side effects!

I just got a letter through today for bloods done two weeks ago. Letter is a blooming mess though as it says bloods were done on 1st March (was actually 21st as I moved just before then so these were my first bloods in this nhs area!) and says that haemoglobin is 106g/dl and that haemoglobin in pregnancy should be 10.5g/dl at least!! Hmm.....lol

I am going to doc tomorrow as apparently I am to have iron preparation 3 times a day plus folic acid once a day and ascorbic acid twice a day! Will be asking the doc if he can translate the bloody letter into coherent language lol

I was prescribed Ferrous Fumerate for my anaemia (before I had my pregnancy certificate) - took the precription to Boots who told me that I could buy the exact same tablets for under a pound - or I could pay £7 for the prescription cost! - I know you'll get them free now but for the sake of a pound and starting to take them now rather than waiting I think its a pretty low cost to pay to put your mind at ease :)
