I've been told to take iron tablets at my last midwife appointment. Does anyone know which ones are best during pregnancy?

I got prescribed them, maybe ask them to give u some? X

Yeah, I got prescribed them too. I imagine any that said suitable for pregnancy would be fine. Ask your chemist :)

I asked the pharmacist last week and he said they are all about the same. I asked about the liquids and he said that it isnt worth it for the little bit of extra iron that gets absorbed. I think any kind your local store carries is fine!

Mine were prescribed too.. When you get them take them with a glass of orange juice or something Vitamin C based x

Hi,
I'm in the UK so not sure what you'll be able to obtain in your country's pharmacies but if you think you may get problems with side effects such as constipation you best bet is Spatone, they are liquid sachets and provide very good amounts of iron. I personally couldn't stand the taste even mixed with anything so onto the tablets, easiest preparation of iron on a sensitive stomach is Ferrous Sulphate on my esperience. You can also get Ferrous Fumarate, they are essentially the same I can't tolerate the fumarate very well so take the sulphate and they are doing the trick :) They sell ferrous sulphate over the counter here so you could try to buy them :)

Mine were prescribed aswell....also on multi vits to help balance it out as im not much of a fruit and veg eater..

I was just told to ring my GP and ask for them on prescription, which reminds me I must do this on Monday morning!

i got given pregncare or something named along those lines

Not sure which ones to advise really, but don't be surprised if you get green poops(like i was):haha:
and like another poster said, take with orange juice as it helps absorb it better.Anything dairy has the opposite affect

i was prescribed pregaday iron tablets. do be warned about the side effects though - constipation and green black poo!!!!

I got prescribed some yesterday.. They made me feel SO ill and made me sick :( x

I wasnt prescribed any, she advised me just to go to a local pharmacy and pick up "slow fe iron tablets." So i take my prenatal in the morning, and iron tablet in evening with dinner. It has increased my energy a great bit as i had been feeling very fatigued! Hope this works for you.

Hi there,

I suggest you go for Spatone. Tablets usually comes with side effects. I had a prescription and it made me really uncomfortable and sick! Spatone is really good, easy on the tummy and no side effects. You can't have them with a prescription tho but you can get them on offer in Boots.

Hope this helps :)

Hey, just be careful with the tablets if you do get them prescribed... I had ferrous sulphate tablets prescribed by the Doc and after 2 days I was getting lightheaded/feeling like I was about to pass out/being sick and not being able to eat because of pains in my stomach!
Then they swapped me onto ferrous fumerate which still made me feel sick and lightheaded but also caused a reeeally itchy rash on my bump and gave me awful diaorreah (tmi!) so I'm now on the syrup (which is meant for kids haha) because my iron levels are so low I need to make sure I'm taking at least something!
It may just because I'm generally an overly sensitive person anyway so my body was just like what the hell is this?! But I would say take with water not orange juice because it's way too acidic and causes havoc with your stomach!

Hope you find something that suits you x x x
