Is anyone else not giving into the food restriction hysteria?

nah Australia...

over here hotdogs arent very popular anyway but its not on any of my avoid lists ....

Haha I'm in Australia too, I can't believe you weren't sure what a hotdog was! That's so funny, because I love them and always thought they were really common! I always walk past Wendy's and wish I could get a hotdog and a chocolate milkshake! :)

The only thing I'm really careful about is the fish I choose to eat, processed meats/deli meats/undercooked meats because of the lysteria, but that's about it. I know there are a LOT of people that would go APE over even the tiniest little thing with food, but I know there's really no harm if you're using common sense. There's a lot of crap that they feed you nowadays on what not to do or eat during pregnancy, and its way overdone lol. I feel as long as you're eating, thats a good sign.

I'm Aussie too! I call hotdogs savs. You can get thin ones and thick ones and short ones. I buy them at woolies and boil them in a saucepan until hot through. I guess that could kill any bacteria so makes it safe :-)

I do and always will do whatever's best for my baby, not me. So yeah, I follow the guidelines just in case. Better safe than sorry. However, I don't go OTT, so I don't avoid things like caffeine or tuna, I stick to the guidelines. Look, health authorities don't just put these guidelines out there for a bit of a fun, a 'ha, let's make these poor pregnant woman miss out on alllllll the good stuff'. There's solid research behind them. Sure, the risks are low but come on, these are our BABIES! I'd do anything for my little one, including missing out on my favourite cheese, Brie!

I'm afraid I am with Trixie on this one. I have been following the guidelines, I would do anything to have this baby it's taken us long enough and whilst I know Not much I can do to prevent things I will not risk anything. There is allot of food I miss runny eggs, brie, etc...

Maybe that makes me OTT obsessed but well  lol

I am allergic to eggs so I don't eat them normally and soft cheeses and soft serve are out normally as I'm lactose intolerant. No raw seafood and no lunch meat either. Always wash foods before eating them if there is a chance of listeria. Subway here heat the chicken before they put it on a sand which so I stick to those ones but have only had a couple anyway as its expensive.

I follow the guidelines, it's only for 40 weeks and there's plenty other things to eat. No point in taking the risk, imagine how bad you would feel if something did happen.

I wouldn't think I am being hysterical for sure. I eat almost exactly the same as before. Just more careful about the eggs (we don't have those lion stamped ones here as far as I am aware and my dutch family told me not to eat them raw even before I was preggy) and what I order from outside. I mainly avoid sushi and raw meat (like american filet or carpaccio) because I get mine from the supermarket usually so I know it's not the best place to get it from. Staying away from alcohol and that's it. The pregnancy is kicking my butt enough that I don't want to get sick from food on top of it, even if it might not pose a risk to baby directly. :haha:

Other then typical hotdogs that sounds like a differant type of sausage we get here called a savaloy (its mostly a southern english thing though, my northern family has never heard of them)

You know what? Your all making me want a subway so I know whar im having for lunch today :)

currently not eating anything, but in general i dont worry to much about all the rules and regulations, everything in moderation.

also im a bit bland with my food likes any way so dont eat deli meat, sushi, liver, pate ect im more a steak and chips kinda gal.

I'm also following the guidelines.

It's one thing to say "well xxx is a risk to non-pregnant adults too, and I've never had it before, so why should I change my diet now?" but when you're not pregnant you are only risking your own health - I do find it a bit selfish to knowingly go against the advice (which as some people have already pointed out, is there following years of research and experience - it's not made up!) and risk the health of your unborn baby. It might be a small risk, but it's significant enough to be worthwhile advising all pregnant women of it.

I've never been in a car crash, and I'm a good driver, but I still wear my seatbelt.

It's only 9 months. Yes I miss my runny eggs and rare steak, but I would be beyond devastated if anything happened to this little one that I could have avoided. It's one thing for baby to have a genetic problem which is just bad luck, but I know if there is even the slightest chance that I was to blame I would never forgive myself. It's only a bit of cheese.

There is more risk from listeria from Fruits and veggies (even when washed) than items on the 'restricted list'. The biggest listeria outbreak in the US was from cantelope! Organic produce is not immune either. When my oldest was one, he contracted salmonella while we were on vacation, from spinach at a very reputable restaurant. We know how we contracted it as we were wrapped into a big investigation. He was sick for a long time, but we don't live in fear. We still eat out. My Obgyn had been in practice 40+ years, and has never seen a pregnant woman lose a baby from listeria.

There are some things I avoid... deli meats/hotdogs/undercooked meat - but I still had the occasional sunny side up egg when I was pregnant with DS, tuna in moderation, soft serve iced cream, cola, honey... peanuts... cripes, probably more than I even realize is on the massive 'nono' list

Can I ask why not honey? Just curious x

Honey is fine in pregnancy/breastfeeding. While
Honey can contain (often, actually) botulism spores, an adult digestive system is more than Acidic enough to kill them as designed, so nothing is passé to babies or breastmilk. Infants under the age of one, however, should not have honey. Their systems are not developed enough to handle the spores.

I'm a big Manuka Honey believer and we always have some in for the whole family, a great natural immunity booster.

but on the other hand a pregnant woman has just as much chance of getting hit by a bus as a none pregnant woman.
Does that mean your selfish leaving the house and risking it?

I eat what I like but not pate. Never eat shell fish anyway so no big loss to me.
