Is anyone else not giving into the food restriction hysteria?

I eat what I want for the most part. I cut back on caffeine, but have is every single day. I believe in alcohol in moderation. I've had sips of my DH's beer once in a while and in public (gasp!!!). The one thing I have completely given up is smoking. Oh, and I forget my prenatal vitamins a few times a week.

I'm also following the guidelines.

It's one thing to say "well xxx is a risk to non-pregnant adults too, and I've never had it before, so why should I change my diet now?" but when you're not pregnant you are only risking your own health - I do find it a bit selfish to knowingly go against the advice (which as some people have already pointed out, is there following years of research and experience - it's not made up!) and risk the health of your unborn baby. It might be a small risk, but it's significant enough to be worthwhile advising all pregnant women of it.

I've never been in a car crash, and I'm a good driver, but I still wear my seatbelt.

It's only 9 months. Yes I miss my runny eggs and rare steak, but I would be beyond devastated if anything happened to this little one that I could have avoided. It's one thing for baby to have a genetic problem which is just bad luck, but I know if there is even the slightest chance that I was to blame I would never forgive myself. It's only a bit of cheese.

but on the other hand a pregnant woman has just as much chance of getting hit by a bus as a none pregnant woman.
Does that mean your selfish leaving the house and risking it?

No its not selfish to leave the house... but it is to play chicken with cars...

U cant stop.eating everything incase... but u can avoid certain things to dramtically lower ur risk...

Same as u cant not leave the house but u shouldnt be playing chicken with cars coz if u dont it will dramatically lowet the risk of gettin hit...

I kinda agree with this poster coz I think it is kinda selfish to put ur needs infront of your babies...
However each to their own but I personally couldnt live with myself knowing that was a choice I made that killed my child...

All I could think about after hearing those women who lost their babies recently to the soft cheese thing was how I could never live with myself if I was them and knew by eating it I was taking a chance.

Clearly it can happen as low as the risk may be ...so why risk it?

There is more risk from listeria from Fruits and veggies (even when washed) than items on the 'restricted list'. The biggest listeria outbreak in the US was from cantelope! Organic produce is not immune either. When my oldest was one, he contracted salmonella while we were on vacation, from spinach at a very reputable restaurant. We know how we contracted it as we were wrapped into a big investigation. He was sick for a long time, but we don't live in fear. We still eat out. My Obgyn had been in practice 40+ years, and has never seen a pregnant woman lose a baby from listeria.

We had a listeria outbreak here (in Aus) in February this year - a pregnant woman DID lose her baby it was completely and 100% caused by listeria from soft cheese.

There are hundreds of types of bacteria that can harm that are not even on the no no list so unless you plan on eating and drinking nothing but boiled water then anything and I literaly mean anyrhing has the potential of carrying harmfull bacteria.
Rice has a bigger threat then unwashed salads due to bacillus cereus which is the only bacteria spore that can not be killed by cooking yet no one mentions that in foods to avoid.
My point is there are no foods without risk.
Of course its everyones right ti avoid what they want but alot is hype and no real reason, take nuts for example.
Yes nuts used to be on the avoid list but only because it was a experiment (was told this by 3 midwifes) they wanted ti see if allergies reduced in children if pregnant women avoided nuts for 10 years, now they tell you not to avoid them to see if cases of allergies in children rise so they can see if there is a differance so they can advise about it in the future.

As for a clarification to my post, my Obgyn hasn't seen it in HIS patients. There is risk in every single thing you do, it's up to each person to decide, and not others position to judge.

well im sure ill be fine :)

i dont go chewing on raw meat, drink egg nog, i hate soft cheese n pate and im allergic to fish :haha:

This is hilarious! I really love the ladies that are trying to shame those that eat what they want with common sense and moderation! So, according to the "guideline followers", it is safer for me to go eat a burger from McDonald's where the workers are doing God-only-knows what with my food than it is to make a burger at home with some pink in it. Ever heard of e.coli? Where the workers aren't washing their hands after using the bathroom? Oh yeah, and MY medium burger is the real risk.

You can get sick from water from the tap. Happened here in my state many years ago. There we go pregnant ladies, let's stop drinking water unless it's boiled, and bottled first. I could get sick from the lettuce in my refrigerator unless it's washed correctly. Doesn't mean I'll stop eating salads.

I can eat all the chocolate I want, but if I eat a piece of raw sushi, I'm abusing my unborn child?

Thats probably a tad dramatic. Firstly no one said uswd the term abusing yoir unborn child... I think everyone here is just trying to do whats best for their baby.no matter what the choice.... I think all anyone's trying to say is let your own common sense provail...

At the end of the day its just a healthy discussion from a few different point of.views... no ones trying to shame anyone...

Its totally your own choice and opinion what u do and ur the only one who has to live with it so its totally your choice...

And for the record...I would rather eat a home cooked burger a tad under than a maccas burger...

But sort cheeses... not so much...

All upto disgression

"It's only 40 weeks"

"I find it a bit selfish"

"Wouldn't you feel terrible if something happened?"

All things that have been said in this thread and all things that are tinged with judgment.

Those statements can be applied in any way u want judgement or not .. and I dont feel anyone is judging anyone here until u strolled in...rather putting up personal opinions... if u dont agree witb that u don't have to.. thats the great part about people not being the same as each other. ..

At the end of the day people need too be able to put themselves on both sides of the fence imo...

I do think its a tad selfish for me to go eat soft cheese ...but thats coz a month ago two babies died where I live from it... others may not have that problem in their area...
Its all relative. ..
And I certainly dont think anyone on either.side has the right to judge anyone on the other

Oh well, come to Quebec, where you won't feel guilty for "killing your child" if you miscarry, because soft cheeses are not on our "avoid" list (such a thing would be offensive to French women you know...)

I've been told it is "selfish" to work out when pregnant, carrying a 12kg kettlebell, yet nobody came to my aid when hauling a 40lb toddler out of a car ;)

Isn't it nice how random and arbitrary the various guidelines are. Quebec women enjoy soft cheese, Australian, American women are selfish and putting their children's lives at risk (;)).

Not that it ever ends here - wean your baby at 5 months instead of 6 months and you'll never hear the end of it. Did you know it selfish to elect for a C-section? Or have a home birth? Did you know it is selfish to give birth in a hospital where you will be on a bed and not opening your pelvis, but your baby will die if you give birth at a birthing centre where no doctors are available?

Is there anyone here who has done anything right??? Haha...

Exactly. .. no one can say whats right or wrong u just gotta do whats right for u :)

Where r u poor women meant to hive birth btw lol...no.
Hospitals... no birth centre's. ..no home lol... what they want u to do... go out in a padock? Lol (jokes)

Common sense here tells me this. All cheeses in the US have to be made with pasteurized milk, soft or hard. Or, if they are made with raw milk, the cheese must be aged a minimum of 60 days in order to kill any nasties.

I totally get you with the working out thing. I am still lifting weights and still working out and my Facebook friends are totally amazed that I'm doing it. The people in my town are amazed too, but I'm not really surprised since I'm in one of the fattest states (and cities) in the States. It's not bad to sit on your arse for 40 weeks, eat chocolate, and gain way too much weight, but it's bad if you go and workout and try and stay fit.

As far as I am concerned, I was not actually told by any medical professional to avoid anything other than the cat litter and even that is just an extra safety measure, in case. I think women are capable of making their own decisions and knowing what they are doing and judging for themselves if they are being reasonable or not. I think the wise thing to do is to be aware of issues that are more common in your area (for example Listeria outbreaks were common in Canada not so long ago) and just go along with that and ask your medical professionals what they think.

I think we should bring the thread back on track now as it has diverted from its original purpose and it was a well-liked thread. :flower:

I'm starving right now and want to eat everything :haha:

I had a slightly runny, organic egg for breakfast this morning with two pieces of toast. One with just butter and the other with peanut butter and honey. Sure hit the spot!

Tad off topic but im a happy bunny now I got my subway ti munch on :)
I blaim you lot for making me want one :)

I do agree with aliss. I'm paranoid about following the guidelines and find it difficult to understand why people wouldn't, but that's 'cos of the massive guilt-trip pregnant woman are put on all the time. Not's not just guidelines etc either, it's things like how often a baby moves, how big your bump is... the list goes on. I feel like I'm constantly on edge and wish I was more laid back like some of the posters on here. Please can you sprinkle some laid back juice on me, girls, so I can enjoy this pregnancy?! I mean, for christ sakes, I feel bad is I eat chocolate cos it has caffeine in it, arghhhhhh! And just now I had a chicken and mayo sarnie at the pub and after, realised I hadn't checked to see if the mayo was 'home-made'. It's getting silly. I-need-to-relax!

I see my reply quoted there. Nothing judgemental in it. Was simply stating what I do in pregnancy and the way I see it. If I do want something to eat that it's advised I don't I see it as its not long until I can have some.

And I bet we'll both have babies that are perfectly healthy.:flower:

I think I want to go out for steak this weekend. Or at least a slightly pink burger.

So many angry people here. Eat what you want. Its your baby. The only thing I avoid is things with a lot of additives ,soft cheeses, and lunch meats and raw fish or fish with lots of mercury. The additives I avoided before I got pregnant, the meats and soft cheeses made me have terrible MS anyway and I have never been a fish person anyway. No one needs to judge, everyone has the right to do what they want with their own babies...lol

BTW I am from Texas and I love me some steak...;)
