Is anyone else not giving into the food restriction hysteria?

Thats probably a tad dramatic. Firstly no one said uswd the term abusing yoir unborn child... I think everyone here is just trying to do whats best for their baby.no matter what the choice.... I think all anyone's trying to say is let your own common sense provail...

At the end of the day its just a healthy discussion from a few different point of.views... no ones trying to shame anyone...

Its totally your own choice and opinion what u do and ur the only one who has to live with it so its totally your choice...

And for the record...I would rather eat a home cooked burger a tad under than a maccas burger...

But sort cheeses... not so much...

All upto disgression

"It's only 40 weeks"

"I find it a bit selfish"

"Wouldn't you feel terrible if something happened?"

All things that have been said in this thread and all things that are tinged with judgment.
I see my reply quoted there. Nothing judgemental in it. Was simply stating what I do in pregnancy and the way I see it. If I do want something to eat that it's advised I don't I see it as its not long until I can have some.

And I bet we'll both have babies that are perfectly healthy.:flower:

I think I want to go out for steak this weekend. Or at least a slightly pink burger.
Agreed.
And I love my steak medium rare, but can't imagine eating a pink burger

Ladies ladies let's calm down and not get angry at one another.
Everyone is entitled to live their lives as they see fit.

All that matters is having a healthy baby by the end of it :flower:

I still have one cup of coffee everyday. After that, no more caffeine. I've been on a tuna salad kick but I DO try and minimize it to only one or 2 cans a week. I don't eat deli meat but I don't miss it either because I don't really like it anyway.

I am pretty much obsessed with goat cheese and my favorite brand is made with pastuerized milk so it's safe (as far as soft cheese goes, I've read and been told as long as it's pastuerized, it's safe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong?)

My husband still forbids I eat sushi :( Eh, it's his baby too so....but I miss it. I think about sneaking out to our favorite sushi joint and getting some. Even after I tell him that people on here say that it's safe if it's fresh! He still says we shouldn't chance it.

Okay, just read through the entire thread. I don't judge anyone. If you eat/drink what you want and don't go by whatever guidlines and have a healthy baby, I say great!

I miss my rare steak, sushi, second and third cups of coffee and Coke Zero but really it's not that big of a deal. I just avoid them now. I look forward to eating/drinking that all in one day after the baby is born ;)

I really just see it as a kind of personal challenge.

This is hilarious! I really love the ladies that are trying to shame those that eat what they want with common sense and moderation!

........

You can get sick from water from the tap. Happened here in my state many years ago. There we go pregnant ladies, let's stop drinking water unless it's boiled, and bottled first. I could get sick from the lettuce in my refrigerator unless it's washed correctly. Doesn't mean I'll stop eating salads.

I can eat all the chocolate I want, but if I eat a piece of raw sushi, I'm abusing my unborn child?

Hi again! Just saw this reply, I presume you are referring to me - just to clarify I wasn't trying to 'shame' anyone - I was just putting my view out there. Surely a thread like this can be expected to spark a bit of debate? Doesn't mean it's personal attack :)

Anyway, I'm afraid I find your responses a little daft - there's nothing quite like taking the 'extreme' angle to try to disprove a point when actually all it does is show a misunderstanding of teh levels of risk we are talking about. Maybe I should stop breathing air as well? Just to avoid any 5th hand cigarette smoke.....

"There we go pregnant ladies, let's stop drinking water unless it's boiled, and bottled first." Well. If I was advised by my doctor that the water in my area is unsafe to drink, then yes I would boil my water first or drink bottled water. In the same way as, when I go on holiday to some countries, I only drink bottled water (and refuse ice cubes in my drink) because I know it could make me sick. I would be even more vigilant in these places if I went when I was pregnant. Fortunately I live in an area where this is not a problem.

"I could get sick from the lettuce in my refrigerator unless it's washed correctly. Doesn't mean I'll stop eating salads." No one said anything about not eating salads, but plenty of people have mentioned washing fruit and veg thoroughly. Is that such a terrible hardship?

"I can eat all the chocolate I want, but if I eat a piece of raw sushi, I'm abusing my unborn child?" Actually, you can't eat all the chocolate you want (if you are following the guidelines). Because chocolate contains caffeine :haha:

Oh my word this threads getting daft! People shouldn't be judged and basically called a bad parent for eating what they like, because to people that don't stick to every rule, that's what it seems to come across like, it's bad enough people say stupid stuff to pregnant women, without being judged here too! Only the other day I took a gaviscon which says on the pack 'safe for use in pregnancy' and I was judged by someone at work for taking medication. (I stopped taking it, let the heartburn make me sick, so she had to send me home) years ago and in different country's these rules aren't in place, they certainly weren't 22 years ago when my mum had me, as she's shocked at the list my midwife gave me, and I'm fine! These things constantly change and vary between times and society's. no need to make it so heavy!

Okay, substitute pizza for chocolate.

I have a point of view on this, and yes, it may be a bit extreme. I'm using my common sense and what I've learned about food throughout the years. I try really hard, and have taken more proactive steps recently, to know where my food comes from. If I go somewhere, I try to stay to local, mom and pop type places. It's not like I'm getting gas station sushi, and if I get something that doesn't seem to be fresh, I don't eat it or I send it back.

To each their own, but I think there are more important things to worry about than some sushi or a medium rare steak.

Oh ladies(or shall i say girls) :haha:

Calm down. Im sure we are all looking out for our children some people may be a bit more anxious than other re:foods.

I eat all the chocolate I want... almost ate an entire box of hedgehogs (https://www.purdys.com/Hedgehogs-P3.aspx - for those non-canadians!) last night... I don't feel the least bit guilty about it either

Oh well I guess there will always be extremists! One thing I can guarantee is that I never followed those daft guidelines and my baby was very healthy...everything in moderation people and pregnancy would be a better world for us all. Just use your better judgement but a bit if salami isn't going to affect baby at all. Unfortunately listeria outbreaks are more linked to fruits and veggies including tap water more than anything else ...

I'm about to eat some smoked salmon... Should i feel guilty? Lol

I'm about to eat some smoked salmon... Should i feel guilty? Lol

No, unless you don't save some for me!

Ooooo, little bit of smoked salmon on top of crackers or toast with onion and cheese cream cheese.

I am looking forward to some oysters on the half shell for my birthday in April, should I feel guilty?

Since there are ladies in this thread who understand the guidelines a bit better than me perhaps you could help me out for a quick second. I'm craving a Chai Tea Latte from Starbucks, but am concerned about the caffine amount... do latte's have more caffine in them than a regular tea?

You should feel guilty about eating poor hedghogs, thats just cruel not to mention the spikes will give you heartburn :)

Nope. A tea latte is just half tea, and half milk.

No offense but the 'I am eating this should I feel guilty' posts is a bit childish is it not...There is nothing wrong with women following the guidelines because they feel safer doing so just like the women who eat what they want cos they don't worry about it....either way it does not matter and it does not effect u if someone does not share ur views on things.

:flower:

https://www.energyfiend.com/the-complete-guide-to-starbucks-caffeine

This site lists a chai tea latte having 50-120mg of caffeine, depending on the size. Since we can have up to 200mg a day, sounds like you'll be fine!

If you're concerned, you can ask them to brew the tea a little less strong, that may cut a bit of caffeine out of it.

you should be fine to have one :) the guideline is up to 200mg of caffeine a day and according to this site: https://www.energyfiend.com/the-complete-guide-to-starbucks-caffeine a venti has 120 :)

and there's nothing wrong with some of us trying to make what was supposed to be a light thread, light again. Seriously... as pregnant women we are constantly bombarded with negativity... it's okay to laugh.

The only things I've been lenient on eating are over-medium, organic eggs maybe once every 10 days, since if there is salmonella, it will only make me sick and not the baby. I eat deli meats because my OB told me if I heat them to where they're steaming, it's fine. I also indulge on tea and coffee when I have a headache before I give acetominophen a go. So long as I don't exceed my 250mg caffeine limit, I'm fine, especially since I was always a heavy coffee/tea drinker. I still eat sushi, but no tuna and only the rolls that have cooked ingredients. I REALLY miss medium-rare steak, especially since only steak and seafood seem to be meats the baby will take! But I've only got 24 weeks; totally can do this with some discipline! I've been dreaming of being pregnant forever, so I haven't indulged in anything that even has a small chance of harming the baby. Hubby is strict on me anyway, so even if I didn't have the discipline, hubby does. Although when hubby isn't looking, I try to indulge in as many chocolate chip cookies as I can! Usually four in a sitting. (;
