Hello,

I just found out that I am newly pregnant. I had a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks earlier this year. I spoke to my Dr and she said that I could take Progesterone. She said that it could only be helpful and not hurt anything. I have had a little brown spotting. I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this experience. I am nervous about taking drugs that I may not need. Should I wait for my blood test results first?
Thanks!

J

I'm currently taking Endometrin and progesterone shots. The Endometrin did make me spot.

The spotting is likely related to low progesterone. Don't fear taking it - it's just supplementation of a hormone you need to stay pregnant. I have a past m/c, and I take 400mg per day orally. It took 2 weeks and a dosage increase, but my spotting finally stopped.

I took it and didn't necessarily need to, but like someone else said it is already a hormone that we are producing. If you do have low progesterone and wait for the blood results it may be too late to do anything at that point.

I'm taking it because I did ivf but no harm to take progresterone. My doctor said too little progresterone is a harm. Better take it. I won't wait until blood test, if your progresterone is low, you need this progresterone meds asap to support your pregnancy but I think your doctor knows better than me.

I too had a mmc back in January at around 7 weeks. My progesterone at the time was on the lowish side (but still considered normalI), I think maybe 15. My fertility specialist told me that if your progesterone level is too low it can lead to the miscarriage of an otherwise healthy fetus but increasing progesterone by supplementing wont make ur body hang onto an unhealthy fetus, ur body will still miscarry. After getting my cycle back and regulated I was started on progesterone right after ovulation the month we started trying again. I read online that a minimum of 10 is required to maintain a pregnancy but my fertility specialist likes to see it over 20. I am just over 8 weeks pregnant now and taking progesterone 200 mg rectally 3 times a day and my progesterone is usually around 40. Rectally helps with absorption as vaginally done if the progesterone tends to seep out. Hope this helps :)

Just be aware that progesterone may increase your morning sickness-or in my case all day sickness-but if you end up with a healthy baby it may be worth it. :) unfortunately I think it's one that one of those things that you'll never know whether it truly helps or not. What would you want to do for peace of mind?

Also I've read but I have no idea how true this is: The progesterone levels can fluctuate a lot during the day. Someplace I read that after a large meal bagel decrease by a significant amount. I have no idea if that is accurate. You may want to ask your doctor but don't be surprised if he or she isn't sure of these details because it might be something that isn't taught in med school or residency.
