Hi Ladies,

I'm currently trying to switch over from bf to ff and feel totally clueless and like a new mum again!

My lo will not wait the 30 mins or so it takes to do a bottle from scratch so I've been trying to work out ways of making my bottles quickly and safely.

I've been boiling fresh water in the kettle, adding 3oz to the bottle, 7 scoops of formula, giving it a good shake, adding 4oz of cool boiled water from the fridge to make up to 7oz, another good shake, then giving to lo.

I thought this way would kill any bugs in the milk powder (to comply with the over 70 degrees thing) and also be quick without fully premaking.

No one else I've spoken to does this so I was wondering if it's ok?

Thanks xxx

As long as the water from the kettle has had 30 mins to cool so it isnt too hot to kill off the nutrients.

Another way is make up however many feeds your LO has a day, but instead of doing the full bottle, say if your baby has 7oz, do 4oz of water cooled for 30 mins and add 7 scoops, rapid cool then refrigerate. When your LO is ready for a feed take out a bottle and boil the kettle with fresh water, then add 3oz of boiling water and shake well and it should be the right temp. That way the bacteria in the formula has been killed when you made up with 4oz of cooled boiling water previously.

Personally I premake all Ava's first thing, rapid cool and refrigerate. Then microwave when needed.

I tried everyother way and this was the easiest cos she's not the sort of baby who will wait 30 mins for a feed!

Possibly a daft question... but if you leave the kettle for 30 mins will the temp not fall below 70 degrees? I only boil the very minimum amount in the kettle and after 30 mins its only luke warm so I'm worried that won't kill off the harmful bacteria.

Yup I do this but I just keep hot water in a flask to save boiling water & leaving it to cool down for every feed

No cos water boils at 100 degrees and it takes 30 mins for it to cool whatever amount you use it's still boiled at 100 degrees xx

I have just started to pre make 4 in one go ready for the day and microwave when needed. It saves so much crying for a bottle and so much quicker. I don't know why I didnt do this first off all. I did it with my first and he was fine. Big strapping nearly 4 year old now!

Ok, so I've been having a good old poke around in cyberspace trying to work this out!

This report https://www.foodbase.org.uk//admintools/reportdocuments/395-1-697_b13010.pdf says that 1lt of water is (on average) 70.5 degrees 30 mins after boiling but for 250mls the average temp had dropped to 51.7 (some kettles the water was as cold as 46). That means that it wouldn't be hot enough to kill off any bugs found in the formula powder.

The next question is... is it better to have your water a bit over 70 or a bit under 70?

God, ff really is a minefield!!!

i just used to make all mine up i know your not meant to but my lo was fine but to start off with i used to but the ready made 1ltr cartons just made things so so much easier and lo didn't get stressed out then hope you find something that will work for you xx

Thanks everyone, I have been using cartons to try and decrease my milk supply gradually - I can't even imagine the pain of going cold turkey. I'm using aptimil so been using little cartons but now that I'm increasing the amount of formula feeds it's working out quite costly.

I think I might try the flask idea, I'm not quite confident enough to pre-make just yet xxx

Hi,

I was exactly the same and i drove myself scatty rooting the internet and then i found this way on here..

I boil kettle and leave cool for 25 mins and then fill a thermo flask for next bottle - when bottle is made i need to put it in a jug of cold water for 4 mins to cool. I normally use the same water for two feeds and then refil kettle and flask. My baby is six weeks old and ive been doing this for two weeks now and its been fine.

Hope this helps x

yeh long as you have boiled let the water cool down, not underfiled the scoop when putting them in the bottle, then shaking and warming should all be fine :)

I was told by midwife and hv that the only reason they recommend waiting half hour is to stop you scalding yourself.

I make with water not long boiled then rapid cool and put at back of fridge. I do 4 each time.

I also believe that the boiling thing is just due to scalding. We heat our own food above 100 degrees and it doesnt eliminate all of the nutrients.

No cos water boils at 100 degrees and it takes 30 mins for it to cool whatever amount you use it's still boiled at 100 degrees xx

A smaller amount of water will cool more slowly than a larger amount of water, regardless of boiling temp.

i pre make my bottles, i boil the kettle put the amount in the bottles and powder then shake and rapid cool in the sink with cold water then another good shake then at the back of the fridge and use microwave for 30 secs to take away the chill and have been doing this pretty much since day 1 xx
