I wouldn't mind if I weren't pregnant. I'm hoping that I will be excused because I still have morning sickness, need frequent bathroom breaks, need to eat every two hours and need to get up and move around every hour or my hands swell up and my back hurts. I've been to court a lot (for the previous job) and I've never seen a visibly pregnant woman on a jury.

Would you feel equipped to serve on a jury at this point? (Remember, I'm the person that has mentally checked out at work).

I wouldn't fancy it really, no... I would probably end up falling asleep lol. Usually I wouldn't mind... I'm nosey like that lol... But the way I feel lately I couldn't handle it haha.

XxX

I remember reading somewhere that you can be excused from jury duty due to pregnancy. Not sure if there are requirements (i.e. must be in third tri or note from dr etc) but they do ask if there's anything that might prevent you from doing your duty and I'd say all that you said. If they keep you then they are asking for the incontinence of your requests :)

No i wouldn't feel able to do it either. Like you say i need to eat often and i get uncomfortable sitting in the same position for too long. I bet pregnant women are excused and i know you can postpone it one time if you have good reasons.

my sister was called twice...the first time she was pregnant with her first and the second time she'd just given birth to her second. She was excused from jury duty both times as they said she could be too hormonal!

I wouldn't feel able to do it. I couldn't be sitting down in court all day due to the SPD which means I need to get up and walk around a bit if I have been sitting on a chair for over half an hour. I doubt I could take my birth ball in to sit on! Also my brain is malfunctioning and would struggle to remember details. Also I would need to be excused at various non changeable times for appointments at the hospital and scans.

When can maternity leave start in the US? over here it's 29 weeks. So you could say that the case might run into your maternity leave and then you wouldn't be available anymore.

I fully expect you can get yourself out of this. Normally I wouldn't say that as jury service is your civic duty. But in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy it would be bonkers to expect you to serve on a jury. Get a doctors note!

Did you get a juror questionnaire to fill out ahead of time? I thought they asked about things like this on the questionnaire. I highly doubt they will make you serve, but if possible get some kind of letter from your doc confirming your due date, etc.

Thank you for the research. I've been looking everywhere for something.

Yes, I did get the questionnaire and I filled it out. I was sure I wouldn't get selected because I'm a county probation officer. (There was nothing on the questionnaire as it relates to pregnancy or being excused.) I wouldn't mind serving but I'm doubting they can accomodate me. Based on the document you posted I can have jury duty deferred since I'm considered to be in the "advanced stages of pregnancy." I think...

Be careful a couple of times I was dismissed because my dad is in federal law enforcement in fact all immediate members usually got excused cause of that then last year they WANTED people with links to government on the jury so my mom was chosen :) along with a county officer . Now my dad couldn't be called due to his job so it was never a question for him.

But they'd definitely send you home after seeing your pg or with a drs note.

hmm...they wanted goverment workers on the jury? That may very well be the case- especially since I'm county and it's a federal jury. I have no doubt in my mind that I would be excused from county jury.

There's no way I would want to do it now, from both a physical point of view & mentally I wouldn't feel equipped, I wouldn't trust my ability to judge at the moment. I am sure that you will be able to get a drs note to get you out of it - stress etc? x

I got a request a few years ago, at the time I was on morphine daily. I spoke to my GP who suggested I ring the number on the form and speak to someone.

The lady told me what to put on the form and I was completely excused from jury service as they cannot get a sound judgment from someone who is taking strong drugs.

I have a feeling pregnancy is one reason they will defer your duty till a later date. Due to my cicumstances, I could not defer.

Not a chance. My brain is too fuzzy. I would be terrified of messing it up!

I got called for Jury duty at 37 weeks pregnant. I had my midwife write a letter saying that a. my chronic back pain prevents me from sitting for extended periods of time (true!) and b. I could conceivably go into labor at any moment so they should excuse me. I checked the box for "medical reason" and sent it with the letter and was excused. Good luck!

My DH got a summons for jury duty today, as well. His jury duty date is the day before my due date . I asked my Dr. what to do, and she is going to write a letter with my due date on it, and I hope that is sufficient. I mean, it might be fine, but it it isn't fine, it REALLY isn't fine!!!

You CAN postpone your jury duty - husband actually just did this since he is job hunting. HOWEVER - I'd probably be more inclined to do it now rather than after baby is here - you know? Unless the case was going to be some big one or it would intefere with my due date. Obviously you wouldn't be able to then.

I would guess there may be some sort of state ruling about it. Possibly an auto-exempt if you're lucky, but most likely just an extension of 6mo to 1yr.

I had jury duty at 25 weeks. Not sure how it works where you are, but here, we go sit in the jury selection room, and they call groups of people up to go to the court room for jury selection. I got picked to go to the court room, but the group waiting there, and the defendant pled and they didn't need us. I'm not sure if I would have been picked or not, but we were all sent back down to the jury room. Never got called for another selection process. Now, I'm good for 2 years. It was a half day of my time. I'm thinking I wouldn't have gotten picked even if I got that far. I'm sure you can probably be excused, or postpone your date. Good luck!

I'd report now, show up, and get dismissed rather than postpone--if you reschedule you'll just have to go back not pregnant and then you're that much more likely to get chosen. If you show up, they'll probably take pity and excuse you. Then you'll have served and won't get called again... For 18 months, lol.
