Firstly, no judgement, just wondering.

Well, they say its ok to drink red wine during pregnancy, and I've heard beer ocasionally as well? Here in the US, its far less culturally accepted than in Europe, but has gotten more common in recent years. I personally am too afraid to, even though studies have shown that an occasional drink is ok, though I may have a glass or 2 of red wine in 3rd trimester.

So, just wondering what doctors/midwives say in Europe? Have they gotten more strict or do they still say its ok to have red wine/beer while preg. And have any of you drank thus far? (Again, no judgement, I promise) What are your reasons for what you decided?

Thanks for sharing! :flower:

they say not to have more then between 2-4 units a week, a shot of vodka is 1 unit and a pint of beer is 2 units.

i used to have the odd drink if i went on nights out, but if my sister was there shed try to make me feel bad and spend the whole time i had my drink tuting at me. its not like i was snorting coke i only had a vodka orange lol

dont let people make u feel bad if u decided to still have the odd drink during pregnancy x

I personally haven't had a drop of alcohol since I found out I was pregnant. My pregnancy book says the occasional drink wont hurt but it's best to abstain completely. That isn't to say that I wouldn't have a small drink if I was at a party or something and I don't think having the odd small glass would do any harm.

They tell us here to avoid alcohol completely during pregnancy (and breastfeeding) and that there is no safe amount. Its a country full of alcoholics though so I guess they feel a need to be very stern.
I was a big drinker before I got pregnant (and indeed the first month when I didn't realise I was pregnant) but since finding out I've only had a glass of wine on my OH's birthday and tried drinking a low-alcohol beer but got sick so I guess my body tells me that alcohol is off-limits.
Personally I would think a little red wine occasionally ought to be ok, it has its own benefits of course, so I think I might have a glass on my birthday

before i knew i was pregnant all of a sudden jack daniels which i loved made me feel sick just looking at it, and i still cant go near it now lol

i was told at my booking appointment that they used to say that u could have 1 or 2 units a week... but since the beginnin of this year they now have to say that no amount of alcohol is ok in pregnancy.
i was shown a sonogram video of a baby havin a seizure in the womb due to 1 glass of wine!!
i personally would not drink... not jus because of the potential risks to my baby... but also because if i had 1, i would want another!! nd whats the point doin that to urself!?
i suppose its like smokin... ur advised against it... it is bad... but if woman want to do it... then its their body / their baby / their right.
xx

I haven't had a drink since I found out I was pregnant at 5 weeks, and I don't think I will do until Isobel is here. I have just got back from holiday and I was going to have a small one to celebrAte my parents wedding anniversary and didn't, I think I have just got into a habit of not doing x x x

i had half a pint of guiness on holiday with a splash of blackcurrant i dunno how many units that is
i also had 1/2 glass of champagne at a wedding recently well 1/4 as i wasnt keen

i refuse to feel guilty over that! in sayuing that im not a big drinker anyhow regardless of pregnancy

I had a glass of champers at a wedding but no more than that.... it just doesn't feel right

I was told by my midwife that the occasional drink would be ok but since I got pregnant (I'm nearly 24 weeks) I haven't had a drop! That's my personal choice and I can't say it's been easy cause I am normally quite a big wine drinker but I just don't see the point in having the odd glass, I would just want another one and I wouldn't put my baby at risk by having more.
I have been to three weddings and lots of parties and it's so tempting to have a glass of champagne but it's just my choice!

I havent had a drink since i found out , havent fancied one tbh but i havent drunk with the other 2 either , however .. i may have 1 small glass on my 30th in a few weeks and maybe a small glass on xmas day but thats it for me , its only for a while i have to do without and since having the kids i dont drink much anyway so cant say its bothered me , plus hubby rarely drinks so that helps lol

I've not had any alcohol since I got my bfpp, not do I expect to for the remainder of my pregnancy. I'm not a big drinker though so am not really bothered about going without for a few months :)

Hi,
I used to love having a few vodkas on the weekend but ive not been able to touch it since falling pregnant. I tried a smirnoff ice the other week as it was boiling hot & i wanted something cold & refreshing. Am glad i was indoors though as no sooner had i drank some i had my head over the toilet
I have had a few cans of beer but i dont feel guilty over it...there are plenty of people doing much worse whilst pregnant.

:flower: Hi ive never touched a drop of alcohol during any of my 3 pregnancies , if im out socialy I drink alcohol free lager it tastes just the same :winkwink: The advice given from our health autourity is zero alcohol throughout which I totaly agree with

No alcohol for me at all either.. I just would feel so guilty that it is not worth it :)

My midwife, G.P, and various hospital personnel I have seen so far during my pregnancy have all told me that I can drink 1-2 units of alcohol once or twice a week.

I am nearly 17 weeks pregnant at the moment and had a small glass of champagne on my dads birthday. I plan on doing the same at my best mates wedding in October. Other than that I am sticking to my Becks Blue.

this confuses me as i've been told by various midwives nd doctors that the nhs have changed policy nd now have to inform pregnant woman that it is recommended that they don't drink...? BUT if they do want to keep drinking, then not to have more than 1 - 2 units... like how we are told not to smoke, but if we do then we have to cut down...
not judging anyone... jus gettin confused.
xx

I didn't drink in my last pregnancy and haven't so far in this one,BUT, when we went to the shop earlier I bought a tiny bottle of wine (the one that just fills a glass?) slightly encouraged by my OH I may add!! Whether I actually drink it is another matter though... I just don't that I can!!!! x

just checked the nhs website...
nhs do now advise to avoid alcohol completely when pregnant...

Gemma that is what I was told too -' do not drink, if you must drink limit it to 1-2 units a week.'

I havent at all this pregnancy. Though I was considering a glass of wine on my birthday. BUT as someone else said - 1 glass would probably make me want more.....

Its red wine that gets me -I can smell it when DH has some (rarely) and then I want some.

Mmmmm red wine :wine:
