"keep busy" bag

so I'd like to put together a special bag for Edward for church, dr. offices, etc when he needs to stay still(er) and quiet(er) and I'm looking for some ideas.

I've thought of

new books
art paper/crayons
snacks


Anything else? That seems a bit bare and won't keep him entertained for 1.5 hours (church service).

Another idea is, the toys you use for the bag. Keep them for the occasions you want them for only, so theyre exciting whenever they come out.

Play-doh.
Puppets.

My nana used to "wrap up" little toys, like toy keys, Happy Meal toys, toy car etc, in wrapping paper, bring them out with us and id be well chuffed unwrapping them like it was Xmas! Probably get some funny looks off other parents though haha.

Oh, and Lucky Bags are always a winner. They're about £1-£2 and usually have a little colouring book, crayons, sweets and a toy etc.

I think there are lots of good ideas here! I usually pack a thomas draw string bag of things but I change what's in it. I always think I should have one just for special occasions like this

i went to a wedding the other week and made up a little purse with bits in....buttons, thimbles it kept her busy for the wedding.

Best thing I have in the bag for Church is a set of Russian dolls from Past Times (the ones that get smaller and smaller and fit inside each other). They keep my nearly 3 year old entertained for ages. Only trouble is, she usually gets mobbed by other children wanting to play with them!
