I have a question about laptop safety. I am an online student and spend SEVERAL hours a day laying in bed with my laptop on my lap. Has anyone ever heard of any potential dangers? Im started to freak myself out thinking cells aren't dividing properly...lol!

Im probably just being really paranoid but Im wondering if anyone has heard anything about and risks?

Thanks in advance!!!!

Only thing I can think of is the heat coming off the laptop. If its directly on your lap, it might give you the same issues as hot baths which they say to avoid?

If you have one of those platform things that its on.. I can't imagine it would cause problems (besides, its better for it to be on a flat surface so the fans on the bottom don't get blocked and cause the thing to overheat)

I'm not an expert, just my best common sense guess.

I used my laptop on my lap for almost all of my last pregnancy as i couldn't walk due to spd. Mw said it was fine but if i was worried to get one of those trays to put above your tummy if you get me? Later on Poppy always kicked when i was typing so i did it even more! Don't worry sweetie xxx

I'll second the heat coming off of it. My laptop gets extremely hot so I don't keep it on my lap. I usually use a platform or a throw pillow to keep it off of me.

I usually put a pillow or a blanket between me and the laptop to combat the heat issue as it seems like hanging out online is one of the view activities I can still do when I'm in bed and the  has kept me in bed alot....

One thing that I'm a little concerned about all the wi fi stuff..... Here in Ontario, Canada they're in the process of banning wi fi connections in schools due to the potential dangers........ But in reality it's hard to get away from all the wireless stuff... things are being transmitted through our bodies constantly whether it be through our own wi fi connection, using cell phones or just hanging out at starbucks

never ever heard that wifi has health consequences?

Careful in using pillows and blankets - it can make your laptop hotter and pose a fire hazard.. most of the air vents on laptops are on the bottom so with a fluffy pillow etc, you're actually blocking the fan and making it get hotter. It can scorch the fabric or even shorten the life of your laptop.

Thanks ladies!!!! I know all that wifi they still dont know much about and it surrounds us everywhere we are unless we live in the middle of nowhere :dohh:

My laptop is notorious for over heating. I have to hold it a certain way so it doesn't...lol!

Silly electronic things I COULD NOT live without!!! :nope:

I read in ttc a while back about the radiation or something, i panic so always sit at a table or put a big book or pillow under laptop just to be cautiuos x

They make laptop stands that have fans attached or even ones like this that should help keep it cool.

There's speculation that wi fi causes brain cell changes which subsequently results in brain cell death causing memory problems and early onset dementia.... It's also been linked to cancer.

And it's everywhere now.... Not sure how one could escape being exposed to it.....

oh and I keep the corner where my fan is off the pillow. My dell use to have a problem with overheating regardless of what surface it was on... but my little acer netbook doesn't seem to have a problem at all.

Thanks Lisa for the link! I need to get one of those! And candy, thats scary stuff!!!

My dell keeps overheating... but only if the cord/AC adaptor gets covered. I stretch it across my couch and occasionally a throw blanket covers it up... if it overheats, it shuts down... while its getting hot, my computer gets really hot too.
So I know I need one of the fan things!

My laptop always overheats so I keep it off my lap (stays the same from TTC).

As for radiation and wifi, its scary to think what it *could* be doing. Maybe it will be one of those things that we will know in the future that was bad for us like asbestos but maybe not. If you are confident that it wont effect you, go ahead but if you don't know or feel it is wrong, don't risk it.

this is probably so silly, but wifi and everything is just everywhere, so everyone is being exposed... so I figure if there are problems, its going to be such a drastic situation that theyll HAVE to come up with a cure/treatment, LOL

If only that were true

I know its wishful thinking, lol.. but thinking it makes me feel better ;)

I've been using my laptop but no one has said anything to me about potential issues. I see mention of the computer heating up being an issue, but thinking about it I don't keep my laptop near my stomach... it's on my thighs so I don't think the heat is close enough... I think you should be fine!

I found this to be an interesting read though I don't see any references as to where they got the studies from.

I think its one of those things that experts are 'expressing concern' over because the effects have not been well studied.

Like the cell phone worries... and how even though some studies have been done that show them to be safe (of course mostly done by the cell phone industry and not independently done)... none of those studies tested the risks of the high volume risk that we use today. Many people out there use cell phones for more hours a day than the studies test. I used to talk for 1-2 hours every night on my cell phone, even up to 4 hours straight on the weekends. Of course I use a hands-free device because my neck would hurt after that long, lol.
