 Really interesting, for anybody hadn't seen it in there already.

She's also put pictures of her placenta.

You could always do this if you're not sure what to do with your placenta - studies would suggest it helps to prevent post-natal depression if eaten when still relatively fresh (as in not frozen!).

I'm personally planning on planting mine, freezing first though until I have a house and a permanent resting place for it...but who knows, if I'm feeling adventurous I may try some. I actually think OH wants to :haha:

I'm donating mine to a study at the hospital, nice to do something with it I think! Thanks for the thread - I had no idea you could put it in a tablet form!

That's a good idea, I never thought of that! :) No problem, yeah it actually sounds like a really good idea. I read she's going to post step by step pics so who knows, that may be how my placenta ends up!

I thought about encapsulating mine too. I have a friend who did the same as the Ask A Mum. In nature mammals eat their after birth and all the birth waste when their babies/puppies/kittens or what ever are born so it doesnt seem all that crazy to me. The nutrients and hormones are said to help the mother recover from the birth and any blood loss.

I think we are going to plant ours with a tree or shrub in the garden :)

I dont have the strongest stomach in the world so its an ewwwwwww from me I'm afraid! Good on you mums that are going to do something productive with it tho!

The whole thought of actually eating your placenta makes me sick lol (no offence to anyone who would like to eat placenta!!) the pictures i've seen of placentas have turned my stomach.
I have never given it any thought to be honest i just always assumed once it was out of me that was it...gone! Planting etc is a nice idea though.......

xx

I just think it's such an incredible and amazing thing. It keeps your baby alive for 9 months then we just bin it!

Making prints with it is another nice idea - it looks like a tree which seems fitting somehow. All being well I'm having my LO at home so I'll bag it and put it in the fridge/freezer until I decide what to do with it. :)

The thought of eating anything from my body grosses me out! My lungs have kept me alive for 26 odd years so far but I wouldn't eat one if it had to be taken out for some reason. Mind you- I'm pretty much a veggie so eating flesh etc isn't my idea of a great meal anyway.

Good on you guys that want to do something with it though. Stronger stomach than I've got!

If they took your lung out you'd assume it was because it wasnt a healthy one and eating it might be a bad idea!

I am a veggie :)

Lol- true!

It's a bit like people that drink their own urine because it's supposed to have certain health benefits, good on them - but I couldn't do it!

I do like the idea of planting under a tree more though, I like the thought that the placenta is helping to give life to the tree once it's finished helping your LO grow.

as a piece of engineering, it is an amazing organ. but im afraid i wont be eating or keeping mine. if the hospital want to use it for research purposes they are very welcome to it. there are some things that just dont go in my mouth, this included.

I dont think I could drink my own piddle....... Funny isnt it.....how some things seem so gross to one person and then completely acceptable to someone else!

Sorry, no offense to anyone but......

I'm usually very liberal about most things, but the thought of touching this (let alone eating it) grosses me right out!

I couldnt eat mine like anyone else feel free to lol

yeah......i usually can stomach about anything. i'm a nurse and nothing really gets to me. but the thought of this...errggh...

and i know there's supposed to be good reasons to do so, but i wouldn't use the excuse that "animals do it" because they also eat feces, breed with their siblings, drink urine, etc etc....ick...

not to offend anyone!! just my opinion!! ;)

The thought of eating it as in having steaks is a bit icky (despite OH's comments...and he's seen one!! He saw the one from his little sister), but I'm all for grinding it up really tiny and putting it in capsules  That way I don't have to think about what I'm taking and it will be beneficial.

But then there's the factor of will I be bothered? :haha: I'd be more than happy enough for someone to do it for me though...;)

you can pay for it encapsulating but it's dead easy if you want to DIY!

At what stage (i.e. how long the placenta has been out for) would I wanna do that, out of interest? I'm fascinated :) And if it's meant to prevent PND I'm all for it

You can pop it in the fridge till you get chance but ideally the sooner the better - a few days is fine though.

Google placenta encapsulation for loads of info. If you OH isnt bothered he could start the process for you.
