How did you do it ladies? How did you teach your lo's? I know it sounds so obvious bur I haven't got a clue! Atm we're putting him on like the 4/5th step from the bottom on the way down and letting him try and get the bumshuffling going on! Is this how you did it?!:dohh:

We still have stair-gates on and they are always closed.

If we are going upstairs she will climb herself several times a day.

When coming downstairs I hold one hand and she holds the bannister/rail with the other:flower:

thanks :D he can climb up no problem and I think he could probably do coming down but our stairs are narrow and I think it's me just being over cautious and not letting him! We have stair gates on still too - I'm so paranoid about him falling downstairs it's scary and he is still in his cot!

That's how we go down the stairs too. If he doesn't have anyones hand, then he will go down backwards. xx

Jacob's only been walking 4 weeks so we taught him to go down backwards on his tummy - scary how fast he can do it sometimes lol We also have stair gates so he never comes down on his own :)

Harrisons is still crawling but he will often 'walk' down the stairs holding onto the rails :dohh:
Iv no issues letting him go up and down the stairs himself, i guess after OH dropping him down the stairs when he was a few months old iv just taught him how to be safe on the stairs. He doesnt even play on them and we dont have stair gates x

KAtie can walk down the stairs but she prefers the bum route

V xx

My son goes down on his front...as in slides down, but on his chest...obviosuly legs down first lol

I just kind of put him into the position and he slid down and now he does it by himself - he loves it!

Omar doesnt know how to come down the stairs. We dont have stairs at home, he recently learned how to climb up holding the rail with two hands at my aunt's place, but I stand behind him when he tries. When he wants to go down he asks me to hold both his hands, & he jumps instead of walking down. He used to crawl up but never tried to crawl down.

Esmé walks up holding the bannisters but up til a couple of weeks ago, I always carried her down. Then it occurred to me that she should be learning it herself! :) now I've started encouraging her to come down on her bum or letting her walk holding my hand or bannisters x

Any time he was near the edge of the couch or bed and wanted down, we'd tell him 'Feet first, on your belly'. So when he encountered steps for the first time, he knew that for steps he'd have to do the same thing and he automatically turned to his hands and knees and then went down feet first.
When he's going down with us, we would hold his hand and help him walk down properly, so if he wants to walk down vs crawl on his own he just says, "Hand" letting us know he wants our help.

We let Tabitha go down the stairs at 10 months, after she'd already been going up the stairs confidently for about a month. We taught her to come down backwards by lifting one foot at a time onto the stair below until she got the hang of doing it herself. Over the next few months she experimented with different methods of coming down and now she'll often slide down fast on her front or bump down on her bottom instead of crawling backwards. She does sometimes walk down a few steps but usually only if one of us is with her holding her hand.

^^^^^^ this.

Once Alfie learnt to climb the stairs, i taught him how to come down by doing the actions backwards. We have stair gates tho so he only gets to do it when i'm with him.

We never had stair gates so once Dec started crawling he would come up stairs with us, until he was about 14 months we carried him down but after that we let him walk holding our hand, he had it mastered in about 2-3 months. :)

We wanted to get Ellis confident in climbing up and down stairs, my mums stairs are configerated so a gate can't be used and visit friends/family without gates. We let him find his own way with someone behind him the whole time. He never went down his bum or backwards, just up and down as you or I would. He has been very confident since about 18 months and gates are now useless as he can climb over them!

CHloe only learnt because they have a mini step set at nursery with a little rail so she picked it up from there. Before she could reach the rail at home I would stand infront of her and walk down backwards holding both her hands (so she was stepping down forwards).

Ihsan is great with stairs, it just happened. He could climb them before he could walk and started coming down them around 13months, he would turn around and go down facing into the stairs if you know what i mean. He just did it himself. At 16months he could walk down the stairs the same way we do and they are stairs that go round on the way down so he had to figure that half way down he must move to the wider part and not try to step down the narrow bit! i am always with him in front of him and we still use the stairgate. I think they just figure it out themselves! Oh and the shoot in the park was good practice too!

We have tried to teach ours to come down backwards feet first. That way then can't do too much damage on their own!

Other than that DD will walk down holding my hand and the other on the wall - she doesn't really come down on her own as i am bothered about her falling which could lead to seizures that she can have.

TBH they kind of work it out for themselves.
