I was watching tv the other day and a character was called Lorna. I instantly loved it! And amazingly dh quite likes it too!!

But.... I just looked up the name. It means "forsaken" or "solitude" on some links. On others it's listed as a variation of Laura, meaning laurel. This is our rainbow baby and anything like 'forsaken' feels very uncomfortable. But I really like the way it sounds with our last name.

Do name meanings matter to you?

Can anyone think of other "gentle" names beginning with L? I have considered Layla but don't like it quite as much :(

I honestly don't think the 'meaning' matters. Its always been irrelevant to me. I love Lorna and also Lorenna.

Lorelei
Lola
Lauren

Meanings don't really matter to me at all :)
I like Lorna, but it makes me think of a very popular active wear brand in Australia called Lorna Jane, so I wouldn't use it myself.

I like the following L names:
Lorelle
Lorelei
Lola
Luna
Lacey
Lara (my name :haha:)

I like it but tbh I like most L names ...

Laia
Lula
Lacey
Lola
Liza
Luli
Lauren
Laura
Lainey

I'm not overly fussed on meaning.

Similar names - Laura, Lauren, Laurie, Lorelle.

My great-aunt was known as Lorna but was actually Laureena.

I'm not a huge fan but I think you should always go with your own feelings - especially if you jointly like it!

Other gentle Ls...and not listed above

Lily ( I love Lilian though!)
Louisa
Lucille
Lara
Lena
Lydia
Lissia

I don't really care about meanings. :)

Similar names that came to mind right away were Lila, Luna, and Lena.

I also don't care too much about meanings. I like to know what the name means, but it would in no way turn me off using a name we loved :flower:

I've known 2 Lorna's and both have been really old ladies. It's hard for me to imagine on a little girl, but I don't mind the name.

Lily is a favourite, along with Leni, Lena or Lori.

DH's great aunt was named Lorna. She passed before I could meet her, she was much older.

I wouldn't look too into meanings, I think it's a pretty name. For L's, I like Lindsay and Lucy

I like Lorna a lot! I guess the meaning is linked to 'forlorn' but I'd just go with the variation of Laura/laurel meaning and stick with that!

Our son's name is biblical and yet we're not religious so meaning didn't come into it for us.

Thanks everyone!! Some lovely names & I think you're right.... Meaning isn't everything. Our dd is called Chloe & that means "green shoot"!!!

It's back on the list of possibles!!

My sister is called Lorna and she really hates it. I think my thiughts on the name are based on that.

I really like the name lylah / lyla

Hi Kath,

Lorna is fairly popular in Scotland - I have an Aunt Lorna and went to school with a number of Lorna's - and it most definitely doesn't mean 'forsaken' here! It is originally a Scottish name, so if it helps, the true original meaning of the name is simply the feminine version of Lorne, an ancient place in Scotland named after an early clan chieftain.

It's a good name!

I am very fussed with the meaning of names. Was pretty disappointed to learn that my name pretty much means "person who cleans up shat-on hay from stalls". Not flattering! :haha:

But I agree with Arohanui, Lorna is a wonderful Scottish name!

Yeah meaning doesnt really matter to me either. Glad its back on your list if you like it.
Other L names not mentioned are Lana, and Lowri (which I love - but I'm welsh so slightly biased!).
