Following on from the shouting thread what do you ladies think about attending gigs and festivals?

I help to organise a music festival every year and despite the fact I'll be 23 weeks pregnant, I'm fully intending on going this year. Luckily we've managed to secure employees for the first time this year so by the time it comes around all I'll have to do is enjoy it. I'm not camping so that's a bonus too!

The only thing that really concerns me is that I usually spend a lot of time backstage on sometimes on stage. I am thinking that perhaps it's not a good idea as the music is so loud there usually. What do you think?

I can't imagine it would do baby any harm as they are so well insulated in there :happydance: it's your ears I'd be more worried about! x

I work in a bar with loud music and baby seems to like it. I dont think it can hurt baby. Maybe startle bab when it first starts! X

Babys can't hear EVERYTHING can they? Isn't it a bit like having your head under water?

I'm going to see RATM in June! Woopwoop, even though I'm preggars :)

We had a brass band come into school the other day and little one started going nuts - think it mustve startled her but she settled down after a while, no lasting damage I'm sure ;-)

Baby always kicks me hard when I go into a shop playing loud music. Even in the car, as soon as the radio comes on, baby is awake. They do jump at the slightest sound they hear.
Anyway I'm staying away from gigs till after the baby is born, purely because I dont have the energy, I cant drink or dance, have to be seated and get tired and achey after carrying bubster around all day.
Im looking forwards to when I will go to gigs again as a treat and a break probably six months post natal.

i love going to festivals however wont be going this year coz im pregnant and do not fancy spending a rainy weekend in a tent!! Lets face it it either pisses down or is so hot that the tent is turned into an oven of doom!

I dont know but i like being in the thick of it at festivals but wouldnt feel right being obviously pregnant and stuck at the front of a huge crowd!!

Your lucky you wont be in a tent!! but i would be prepared for some snidey comment off some do-gooder who doesnt think you should be there!

Too right, crowds and hot sun and being stuck on your feet all day wont be good when you get to 23 weeks. Plus the smell of the greasy burgers and drunks everywhere would put me off :)

In one of my pregnancy books I was reading about this. Excessive exposure to loud noise can damage the baby's ear drums in the womb. I never knew this! It did say, that the occasional concert etc should not do any damage. I think it meant that if you were constantly around very loud noise it may have an affect on your baby's hearing.

This link has a little bit of info on it.

We've managed to get a cottage just offsite for the week which is just great, we were going to get a caravan onsite if needs be. I am expecting comments but as most of the attendees are hippy types I've already had so much support from them and offers of all kinds of massages and relaxation help :happydance:

I guess it won't be the noise so much as the vibration then I should be careful of. You can often feel the bass in your chest backstage so I'm thinking if I can feel it there bubs will do to and might not appreciate being treated like a zanussi on fast spin!

Thanks ladies for all your advice

I would attend and enjoy the time there!!
I will be giving festivals a miss this year due to the tent situation, but the cottage sounds ideal.
I got my first kick off little man when i got back to the hotel after a lily allen and dizzee rascal concert :) so he obviously enjoyed it too

I dont see how the loud music would do any harm to ur baby - i went to a music festival recently (14 weeks), the only bad things were the heat, cos it was 40 dergrees C, watching out for people bumping into you and drunk people, which i cant stand now im pregnant lol. But apart from that it was good! xx

the research shows that loud noise does not affect the baby unless it is over prolonged lengths of time ie in a very loud factory day in day out as your job.

The festival will be fine! Have a fantastic time!

My hubby is a drummer in a hardcore punk band and I still go to all of their local shows, as well as we regularly go out to see lots of other bands play and it's always loud! I don't think it hurts baby, but sometimes I think if she isn't in the mood she pushes herself as far back into me as she can (she did this last night lol). I just stay away from the front near the stage as that's where all the pushy people are and I try to get a seat because standing all night gets really hard after a while.

I will be 23 weeks pregnant when we go to see Metallica! I cant wait soooo excited!

Early on in pregnancy i dont think its a problem, its in the 2nd trimester around 25 weeks when the babys ear drums have formed that they can hear everything and are sensitive to the slightest noise. I think it would be wise to stand well away from the large speakers and take lots of breaks.

I shall be attending the big chill when I'm 8 months pregnant. My OH will be working and did not want to leave me alone. I'm very nervous about sleeping in the tent for 4 days but not the noise, it's not a hugely busy/ noisy festival so all should be ok. My Oh works in live music so have been going to gigs throughout this pregnancy. The baby will also be going to gigs form a very early age, we have baby ear defenders for LO.

Enjoy your festival!

Thank you, can you get backstage camping as I'd be very nervous if I was in the middle of drunken camping! If you haven't got one you must get a camping toilet!!

Yup, we have staff camping passes, plus he'll have an office onsite for me to hide in... they also get their own toilet block so I wont have to share with the "public". Bless him, he's found all the local hospitals and done a lot of planning so I can go... This is my last escape before LO arrives.....

Hey popping over from TTC section  I dont know if this is the same but when My aunt had her eldest (he's now 8) she was 21 at the time and use to go clubs with her friends (obviously didnt drink) and family parties whilst being pregnant. Ever since Bradley has been little he cannot stand loud noises AT ALL...he will cover his ears if the telly is up loud or if his dad shouts up the stairs to his mum! He will start crying and screaming!!

I dont know if its because when my aunt was pregnant she always had her stereo on loud etc. Might not even be connected but Charley whose now 3 is fine with loud noises and my aunt didnt leave the house when she was pregnant?! Good luck anyway hun :) xx
