Anyone got any experience with Love Film? I like the concept but have heard some awful stories about people getting scratched DVDs that don't work and being sucked into subscriptions they can't get out of.

Really tempted to take them up on their 30 day trial when I have baby but don't want to be committed to anything. I know they say you can opt out whenever you want but I know it's not always that simple.

Are there better alternatives?

Dont do it!!! I stupidly signed up for the free trial and then you pay £4.99 a month.. (which i wasnt told about).
They say you have to ring up to cancel it which ive done 4 times and they still havnt cancelled it so gonna have to ask the bank to stop the direct debit.
Xx

I used Lovefilm about a year ago. I think I had the 3 DVD's for £4.99 per month plan?? Anyway I have no trouble when I cancelled. Just made one phone call. They do keep sending me offers and things now but I guess any company would.

I used it for just over a year and never had a scratched DVD either.

DONT DO IT

Its a con, they don't tell you the 'free' trial has an inital fee of £4.99, I was signed up on the street and lied to, their phone operators lied to me and said they had cancelled yet they were still taking money.

Rang up and played merry hell and got it stopped, after I told them I had reported them to my bank as misusing my details as I had not been told about the charges and hadn't agreed for them to take money out. The bank stopped my card and sent me a new one.

Not a reputable company IMO

i wouldn't use them again we did use them for a while but it was becoming every disc was so scratched it wouldn't play and then they took £20 from my account the week after they took their monthly payment and claimed i had told them to take 4months payment in advance which i didn't and it wouldn't have been exactly £20 even if i had
i did manage to cancel fairly easily with only one phone call but do still get emails and letters from them
if you do decide to use the free trail make sure you note down the date the 30day trail should end and phone the week before if you don't want to continue to use them

i have heard blockbusters have an online service as well now and i am thinking about trying it

I've been with them for 5 years and absolutely no problems. Didn't even charge me when i lost a dvd. We've had a couple of scratched discs but reported them as damaged on the envelope and another has been despatched within a couple of days. We don't make as much use as we could. We could probably watch about 8 dvds per month on our package if we had the time to. No issues here.

I had them for the 30 day trial and they were great, dvds coming on time and all played but as soon as I started paying for my subscription it all went wrong. Faulty dvds that wouldn't play, taking days to acknowledge receipt of my film and to send another one out etc. I am sure it was probably coincidental but I felt like that once they had my money, they let their service standards slip. I cancelled with them and have no interest in going back, despite the numerous emails I keep getting.

We use them and haven't had any problems really! we have had a few faulty DVDs but you just have to send them back promptly, indicating that there was an error both on the sleeve you send it back in and online, and they'll send you out another copy with your next DVD, no quibbles! We're on the lowest usage package- 2 DVDs a month for about £4- but you do also get extra credits to use to get extra discs sent out, which is cool! It's my husband who deals with them mostly but I know that he wouldn't use them if they weren't good! They're the same company as the amazon rental people now, I believe.

Beca

Surprised to see so many negative responses, I never had a problem with them.

I used them for two years, averaged between 4-8 discs a month. Almost always received my next disc two days after I sent one back. Was on an unlimited plan, so could even get through up to 4 discs a week when I wasn't working. Only had one disc I had to return as faulty, an old but popular movie so it had obviously been rented a lot. The newer ones (recently rented The King's Speech, as an example - got it within days of it coming out) have been perfect.

I just closed my account as I'd run out of things I wanted to watch, so it wasn't worth the subscription any more. It took a few "yes, I'm sure" clicks to get through the cancellation screen, but it was really quite painless. Got confirmation that it was closed within a few hours.

BTW, if you sign up through Amazon (they're owned by them now) you can receive a £15 voucher on top of the free trial.

My mother uses it and she is very happy with it :)

we never had any real problems, think we had one damaged disc and you just send it back marked damaged and they send another. when we cancelled it was no problem, we were paying something like £15 a month for an unlimited package.

we stopped because we had my son and didnt have as much time and because we has seen everything and was just choosing things and not even watching them. We did get lots of forgin language films that were advertised as such which was really annoying and even ended up with a gay porno once which was a shock to both my husband and I lol!

but as for cancelling no problems at all.

Thanks for all the replies, a real mixed bag! Might just stick to sending hubby to Blockbuster ;)

I am also surprised at all the negative comments. I've had lovefilm for a good 18 months and love it! We used to have the three disc unlimited package but a while ago reduced to 1 disc at a time, but with unlimited online watching (£9.99/month). We don't have sky so this suits me perfectly, especially because our tv now hooks up directly to lovefilm and we can watch all the online available films (literally thousands, I am not joking) straight on the tv (Playstations also have this function).

In all the time I've had discs coming to the house, I think I've only had two scratched discs. Each time I was given the option to have the same film sent out to me again or to have a different one off my list. This was in addition to my normal disc allowance. I sorted it out online very easily and have never needed to call the company. I can also cancel my subscription online and have friends who have done that when they wanted a break.
As for the disc turnaround, it is super-fast. If I get a disc in the post on Monday, I'll get a new disc delivered back to my house on Wednesday. The only time this was delayed was when the post was on strike and when it snowed so much the mail couldn't get to us.

I love that I can get foreign movies that would not normally be available to me, but can also chillax at home when I'm stressing and watch as may chickflicks as I want.

The online library is growing so quickly and we have been promised that soon there will be tv shows available online, too (very similar to Netflix, which is the US version of Lovefilm). I can't wait to have access to Blackadder or the IT crowd whenever I want it :happydance:

If you do decide to go for the free trial, then what you need to do is make sure you make your choice of package clear before the end of the trial (you can set it online - very easy) and return any surplus discs before the end of the month. So, if you take the free trial and choose three discs, but when you start paying you only want to have one disc at a time, select your package online a couple of days before the end of the month and make sure you don't have more than one disc at home or still in the post. Otherwise you will get charged the three-disc package fees. I think that's only fair.

I'd say it's worth a try.

We had lovefilm for ages and NO problems, very easy to cancel aswell - I did it all online. It's a simple website to use aswell

I had to ring up to cancel, when I tried online it said I had to call to finalise the cancellation :(

I'm glad that other people have had good experiences, seems I was the victim of a very bad salesman/reps. I still won't touch them but once bitten, twice shy.

My partner has been with Love Film for years and years and as hes a film freak he loves it. He pays £9.99 a month and we get loads of films, most are unusual or obscure but you can request certain ones and I have to say I normally steer clear of things like that but Ive been suitably impressed. We never have any trouble with them, returns are never a problem, the payments are never a worry and we usually get films relevant to us.

The odd movies we get are generally those my husband added to our list...
Imagine 1960s robot movies!

I have used them for a couple of years and just cancelled a couple of weeks ago with no problem. I did it online and then sent the discs and then they cancelled when they recieved the discs. Easy peasy. You used to have to phone them but not now. They are quick to send you discs and I very rarely got a disc which was too scratched to work. I would recommend them BUT only if your quick and good at remembering to send the discs back. the rely on you "forgetting" to make their money.

Dont do it! I did it and they sent me a film which I watched and sent back and they said they didnt get it back in the right packaging :saywhat: I ended up paying them £10 for a film I didnt even have! They are rubbish.. I never ever got the films at the top of the list either... Always got the ones at the bottom not the favourites

Ive just been on 14 day trail, just started new month, paying 9.99, all dvds so far been fine, all arrived very very quickly, i have not checked bank account on whether they may took more money out though.
