Did anyone else's toddler have a really low apgar score at birth? Just wondering how your toddler is now, and whether you still think about it.

Mojo had an apgar score of 2 at birth and had to be resucitated. He's now really healthy and has had no long term effects, but every time I think about his birth I feel goosebumps because I keep thinking what might have happened if he'd been born even ten minutes later or if I'd had a home birth or something.

not the same but Fynn had NEC when he was born and Sam had to be tested every four hours for blood sugar every four hours as he was below 5.5 lbs. Sams levels werent great so we had to stay in another night - that night was when Fynn took a turn for the worse had we been at home i wouldnt have had a clue!!! NEC can take a newborns life in hours - soooooooooo Sam saved his brother. I still get all panicky when i think about what would have happened xxx

my lo had 1 at 1st but went straight up to 10 he was just in shock his heart was beating but he couldnt cry as he had to much mucus and was born quickly. i never think about it as its quite common

noah had mechonium aspiration and bradechardia so he had a apgar score of 2 then 5 but he's totally normal now

Daisy did and wasn't breathing and had the cord round her neck. She is 100% fine but I do think about her birth a lot and it was so traumatic.

Abigail had a 2 at delivery, at 5 mins it was 5 and at 10 mins it was 10. Dont think it has had any lasting affect on her. It has on me though! Still terrified everytime i think about it!

Imogen was 2 then 9 at five minutes. She aspirated meconium and stayed in SCBU for a bit. I was too off my head on the morphine by then to be really worried, but I was angry afterwards that they made me push for so long when it was obvious that she was stuck and in distress. She's hit her milestones a little late, but tbh I think that's because she's lazy rather than any effect from her birth.

DD was a 3 at birth, the placenta had ruptured and I was bleeding out. Very traumatic to say the least. Now that I'm pregnant with my second it's a bit more to the front of my mind alright. But DD is doing great, and they did a lot of checks to ensure that if there are long term affected they will be addressed (including an MRI to check brain function). In the end they decided that she's doing great, and there's nothing to worry about.

Ruby was a 2 but went to a 9 or ten quickly after a little help, yes very scary but no lasting problems and think it is common x

It's definitely not uncommon, I see a lot of babies born with low apgars (through work) and they automatically get a paediatric referral to assess their development after a few months as low apgars are often due to oxygen deprivation which can potentially have an impact on neurological development. My daughter herself had low apgars at birth and needed resuscitation but it seems to have caused no lasting damage. I was talking to one of the paediatric docs the other day and she was saying it rarely causes any long-term damage as long as they recover quickly and the apgars pick up by 5 mins (which in my experience, they almost always do)

H was a 7 then a 9 - again cord round neck twice and chest once (how long was the damn cord!) and her heart stopped twice in labour - emergency c delivery. I still get really upset thinking "what if" and how distressed she must have been.

Count our blessings now eh.

Molly's was 4, her cord was round twice, merconium present and she wasn't breathing :(

Dont have anything to add as she is only 5 weeks old - just interested what everyone else says as Im so worried about her :(

xx

It's so nice to hear that no one here has had any long term effects from the 'bad' birth. To see my son now, you'd never guess how ill he was when he first arrived.

Makena did, because I had a general for my section, and so she got some of the drugs too...and she had breathing issues and was in the NICU for the next day and bit, was tube fed due to low blood sugar (not related I don't think). She is fine now, except she has autism and apraxia and she was early and has always had severe lung issues with many pneumonias...again, not really related, but that is how she is doing. My other two children had normal apgars and are completely fine.

Alice scored 1 and took them 5 minutes to ressusitate her she spent 3 days in the special care unit and im still put off having anymore children because of it :(

Yep, my lo had a low apgar at birth and it was still very low at 5 minutes. She had inhaled a huge amount of meconium, so much so that she was on the verge of having to be transfered to Great Ormond Street for an ECMO. Not a day passes that I don't think about that day and those that followed.
Thankfully she pulled through and she is now a ball of energy, into everything, babbling constantly and has always been spot on with all of her milestones x

LOs was 4 then 8 and he wasnt breathing..he was taken to scbu and monitored there for a few hours then declared ok. Hes never been checked after and hes fine developmentally.
I go over it in my head, lots..as it was traumatic though..

So the moral of this thread is that our little one's are all fine - its us mummies with the long term effects of a low apgar :)

:hugs: to all the mummies xxx
