Hi all

Ive just got back from a midwife appointment and she got my iron results back and they were at '10'. She said when it gets to the stage where they are at '8' during labour it could lead to a blood transfusion.

She advised me to keep taking my iron tablets and eat food thats rich in iron. Has anyone else had this?

hey, i had low iron throughout my pregnancy, and ended up nduced at 37 weeks but because of low iron they couldnt start til i had a test to check my gourp again and make sure they had some blood on standby should i need it. i did in the end need a transfusion but that was due to losing 3 ltrs of blood, in all honesty should yoou need it it is honestly not as bad as you may think only downside was having it just after giving birth i couldn't look after my own baby i had to have help from mw through the night :( hopefuly you will be fine :)

Hi,

I went to see my MW on monday and i too was 10....She said that any lower than that and she would be concerned but said that at that level she would prefer i ate myself to a better level rather than poppin pills so ive taken her advice and im eating lotsa dried fruit and nuts and drinking lotsa O.J to help absorb the iron too!!!

Im not to worried, just keep up with the good diet and keep taking the tablets and you have nothing to worry about whatsoever - :hugs:

just keep taking your iron tablets hun. Eat plenty of leafy greens, broccoli and baked beans have iron too. I try and eat weetabix or shreddies as they have iron in and drink a glass of orange after as it helps absorb any iron. Dont drink tea with your meals as that is supposed to cancel the iron out. xxx

mine are 9 at the moment, really good for me and im taking alot of iron, when i was pregnant with my son they went down to 7.2, when it gets below 8 they really start to worry due to bleeding after delivery. i got it back up to 8 when i delivered my son and bled a normal amount with no complications. a week later they were back up to 9.
i take iron with orange juice twice a day :)

ive had low iron threw out my pregnancy too

Thanks everyone. Going to invest in some orange juice and stop having tea altho I dont drink a lot anyway.

Its so worrying all this pregnancy stuff!

I was on ferrous fumarate for my low ferritin iron level a few months ago and went back to the doctors after the tablets finished to see if I needed more so he advised I have a blood test and was told when I phoned for the results that it was fine and wouldn't need more tablets.

I just got back from my midwife appointment and she asked about the iron tablets after noticing them in my pregnancy notes and I said I finished them and she was shocked and said I need to keep taking them throughout my pregnancy so I told her what had happened with the doctor and she went to check my ferritin iron level on the receptionists computer and it was 15 whereas it was meant to be between 20 and 200! So I'll be picking up a prescription for them tomorrow and if the same thing happens to you, make sure you find out what the result is, not just take their word that it's fine!

4 weeks ago my iron was 8.8- i was on ferrous sulphate, cut out tea and coffee and all the unhealthy food, ate red meat and loadsa veg and stuff, also porridge for breakfast (yuk) and 3 soft boiled eggs a day and my iron is now 12

I've had low iron throughout my pregnancy. My levels were 9.7 and so I was put on iron tablets.

I'm hoping to give birth in a midwife led unit rather than the main hospital but they will only allow you to go there if your iron is above 10 (due to bleeding during/after labour) and there are no other complications. I had a blood test last week to see if the iron
tablets had brought my levels up and they're now at 10.2 so that's much better. I have been told to continue taking them up until I have my baby and for a few weeks afterwards depending on how much blood I end up losing.

Mine aren't as low as yours (was 11.9 - MW said they would give tablets at 11.5?) and told me to just eat more iron. So I've been having lots of weetabix too with sultanas on (yum yum!) and eating more red meat. We have had steak twice in the last couple of weeks - this child is costing us a fortune!

My ferritin levels have been really low throughout this pregnancy, and have been at about 5 for the last month and a half. The doctor prescribed me iron tablets but they make me throw up. It has gotten so bad I have been signed off work with anemia. It is so frustrating - I can't walk very far or very fast, can only do housework for about 5 minutes before I need to sit down, and find it really difficult looking after my 14 month old - picking up is becoming nearly impossible. If you can get your levels up do as when they get this low it is horrible.

I've dropped from 12 to 10, I've been but on iron tablets too . . . The midwife told me to eat lots of veg and greens but also said dried apricots are good to eat too! Don't know if this true

my iron is now 10.4 is was lower than that a while ago but has been at 10.something for a month now - its not going any higher even though i am still taking the pills and following the dietary advice - 10 must be my number?!

I'm borderline as well. 10. I've been taking an iron supplement to give myself a boost now that labour is nearing.
