Hi,
my dh and I have been trying to have children for a year now and we have just learned that he has a low sperm count. He did 3 tests with the following results: 10 000 000, 14 000 000 and 6 400 000 per ml. It is really sad but at least we have options (which I don't know yet). My husband is being referred to a fertility doctor in Toronto but I have no idea how long it can take. Does anyone know what the next step is for a low sperm count? My doctor told me he wasn't going to give pills to my dh because of its low efficacity. I know we have insemination or in vitro in a future as option, but in between, what will happen? Also, should we keep on buying ovulation kits to try every month or just let it go for a while (my cycle is between 32 and 41 days). I just don't know what to think at the moment, at least my dh is really supportive, so is my family.
Thank you!

Hey, we've just been told my hubby has a low sperm count too. His doctor initially told him it was only slightly low and not to worry and get retested in a month, but at our first appointment with the fertility specialist yesterday he said it was 8 million per ml and only 1.2ml. So I think that's pretty low... He said because I have ovulation issues due to pcos that we've to go back in 3 months and if his second sperm count is still low then we'll be put on the waiting list for IVF. I'm glad my hubby doesn't seem to understand how bad it is, and he's happy just accepting we may need help because of me.

Do you ovulate ok? If so they might go for IUI first? Then maybe IVF if that doesn't work. There are still plenty of options.

I don't know about waiting times in Canada, but where I am in the uk it's about 3 months for initial appointment then 3-4 months for second appointment if needed then 6 months for IVF. The nhs is notorious for long waiting times, so yours is bound to be better?

Thank you for responding. I do ovulate every cycle, which can be between 28 and 41 days, depending on the month, which is hard to pinpoint exactly. I usually take the temperature and it is pretty good. I am hoping things will move forward, and hoping for you that things will happen soon too. I will let you know how time is in Canada. :)

I really hope your wait isn't too long, although I know even a few days feels like forever when you're anxious to get things moving. Good luck and let me know how you get on :)
