Madeleine?

We are on team yellow so trying to think of boys and girls names. Don't have any opinions on boys names but I really, really love the name Madeleine for a girl.

When I told a friend they were appalled and said that "would be such a sad name because it would remind them of Madeleine McCann"?!?!

I think they're being utterly ridiculous and, even if that's what's associated with that name (for the time being) what's the big deal? I think it's a pretty name, her parents thought it was a pretty name and I'm sure they wouldn't expect people to stop using it?!

Besides, she was/is a lovely little girl that a really sad thing happened to. It's not like we're planning out calling our child 'Adolf' or 'Pol Pot' or 'Saddam'!! 'Jack' is the most common boys name out there yet 'Jack the Ripper' was an extremely prolific and very evil serial killer. Madeleine is just an innocent girl!

Am I overreacting? Or does everyone else think the same as my friend? I'm scared to tell anyone else our name choice in case of getting the same reaction!

Madeleine is a beautiful name and thats just what it is (a name and shouldnt be associated with a person)

I'd say if you like it go for it, the first thing I thought of when I read the name madeleine is what a lovely name, followed by it's quite difficult to spell but that shouldn't put you off! x

Madeleine is a gorgeous name -- Many children go missing, which is awful & horrible -- But their names can still be used. People still use the names Sabrina, Somer, Caylee, Haleigh, Natalee...... even tho they are high profile missing children cases.

Your friend is being rediculous....

If you are still unsure tho, you can always go with Madelyn??

keep with it hun its a beautiful name i look after a little girl with the same name and noone has ever mentioned it to her parents! plus most people will probably call her maddy for short!.. names can be related to anything many people dont want to name their kids a name that celebs have because they think everyones just going to think of the celeb and say oh thats where you got the name from when it just isnt the case!.. if you like a name stick with it bugger what everyone else says! x

That's exactly what we're doing with our name, I'm not bothered if other people like the name we've chosen or not but no one will make silly comments after you've officially named your baby

Its a beautiful name! Of course Madeleine McCann will be in the hearts of most British people for a long time to come but it will not be the first thing that springs to mind when you tell people! I too kept the name Poppy a secret till she was born as i told someone before i even knew i was on team pink and they laughed in my face. She was the only one though, as soon as i tell people her name they love it and that would be the same should you choose the name Madeleine, the only Madeleine they will think of is yours xxxx

It's my great grandmother's name. We'll be using it as a middle name probably, so I like it. I'm sure every name out there has something unpleasant attached to it, so don't worry.

I loved Madeleine... I have done forever. But sadly, my husband said he thought of the McCanns too and wasn't keen on it anyway.

I love it - I tend to associate it more in terms of the book Madeline though than the missing child.
It is in my top choices, if I ever have a girl

I wanted to name my last daughter Madeleine (after my nan), but MIL said the same thing about Madeleine McCann and it put OH off . I LOVE the name, and we did use it as Daisy's middle name, but I do still we had used it as a first name. xx
