so i really want a holiday of some description this yr and due to money really cant go abroad. so ive always wanted to try cornwall and talked about it last 3 yrs and its never happened so i really wanna go this yr. LO will be a23 months when we are looking to go- july (avoiding school hols)and st ives looks ace so thats the plan.

oh is concerned thats its perhaps too far in car . am i being selfish thinking it would be ok? i think shes love the beaches etc and we could either drive thru night or stopover on route. its 6/7 hrs according to sat nav

what d'reckon?

Hmm I think if we were doing it, I'd probs do it at night. I'd go swimming or something so he was pleasantly tired, then go at nighttime. I think I'd want to get him out midway through coz he would be pretty achey being in a car seat all that time. It's a toughie but it's do-able I think x x

We have a DVD in our car, which is brilliant for long journeys.

Other than that, I stop at lots of service stations, particularly those with play areas.

I think it's do-able, but my kids are really good in the car and like I said, we have the DVD.

oh, also for when they're crying and you can't stop... sweets! after all, it's only a one-off trip

thanks jojo - i anticipate wanting to move there when i see it!

where in wton are you?

Grappenhall! Whereabouts are you?x

just round corner - latchford town end . youre a teacher right? grappenhall has decent schools. im a sado, been checking things out already. i wanna move and grappenhall is my pref if we stay in wton, if on the other hand we win the lottery then knutsford has my eye..

Oh my god, you're just round the corner and our babies are pretty much the same age! Crazy. I always feel amazed by people on here being "real" :haha:

Yeh I teach in Padgate. We moved to Grappenhall coz it's nice and quiet and the schools are good. Thelwall Primary is literally at the bottom of our road so it's perfect x

we do a 6 hour trip quite often as inlaws live far away.

these r my tricks of long drives.
plenty of snacks i do little boxs of graps, rasons, apples normally a prebag from asda of them so they dont go brown. then i have 1 bag of buttons for emergencies lol.
drinks i always have a few ready.
dvd player with her fave programs.
my ipod with games onit for her.
kids music cd for the cd player.
teddys
toys
books ones with sound r good keeps her more entertained.
stuff to draw with.
i also sit in the back with her to keep her enterained longer (oh drives).
also every wee stop me and oh have we all get out the car go for a walk around the car i change her nappy often so she isnt wet sitting in 1 place so every stop i basicaly change her.
also comfy cloths ie dungeries or somthing not around the waist lo used 2 get pains sitting in 1 place long journeys if she had anything around her waist.

but there is no reason why u cant go were u want it will just prob take u longer with lo than it would if it was just u and oh thats all. i say go for it u will all love it cornwall is amaizing.

really appreciate your advice thanks

I think you can plan it to suit LOs naps habits:thumbup:

We regularly take LO in the car to the In laws from London to North of France. About 7hrs driving in total.

We leave mega early which means LO is knackered and will sleep most of the way to the ferry port. We get ferry instead of eurotunnel, so she can move about on deck for 90mins and have brekkie.

By then, she will usually sleep in the car after about an hr from Calais. This maybe for up to two hrs. When she wakes we stop and have a good break at some services.

The last hr is usually tough with her getting cross but it is manageable:thumbup:

Yeh been a few times but it's not really contained enough iykwim - he always races off and tries to get into the kitchen and stuff! Little pest :) we usually go to The Jungle over in Winwick (near LA Bowl). It's a bit of a trek but he can whizz round and let off more steam there :)

Easy. My DH works a 24 hour drive away, and I will be taking both girls to see him soon. We will take it slowly with plenty of stops, but I don't see it as a problem at all. We just went on a family holiday and that was a 6 hour drive

feel like im hving to convince OH that the holiday will be worth the drive but dont want to appear selfish

excellent - defo getting the positive vibes... st ives here we come :happydance:

We're going from ours to Queenstown(nz) in march, it's about 5/6h if you go straight through, but we'll stop so probably closer to 7/8. We did it when she was 6 months old too. We also leave early and plan around naps.

Just take plenty if food, toys, music and stop regularly for breaks, leg stretches and pick a nice open grassy spot for a picnic lunch and run about.

Men tend to be hesitant about all the driving etc, keep telling him it will be worth it! Of and if you going to Cornwall avoid travelling on a fri or sat if you can. The M5 and A30 get pretty slow.

I live on the south coast and my parents are in the scottish highlands, it is about a 12 hour drive.

We do it overnight, leaving home after tea 17301800ish, stop around 9ish for a snack, loo/nappy break, milk, pop her into her pjs and then wrap her up in her car seat with blanket etc..

DH and I then share the driving/sleep and we get to theirs around 0730 in the morning.

She is 3 and we do it twice a year.. we are normally tired for a while, but it ist the easiest way, other inlaws are in derbyshire and we do the same, as it is 5 hours to theres, if we do it in the day it takes 8hours min!

i reckon it will be fine, we are going to Weymouth is June and thats about a 3 hour journey for us so no where near as far but i would travel 6 hours to get away definitely i would just take a break half way there............i am buying dvd players for the car before we go this time just to maybe try and stop the 'are we there yet' from my eldest daughter :haha:
