Massage in first tri?

Are we allow to get massage in our first trimester? My back has been killing me and I am really dying for a massage now but I am not sure if it's ok to have one!

A lot of massage places won't do prenatal massages until after the first trimester. It's generally a liability thing so that, heaven forbid, the mother miscarries, they can't be blamed for somehow causing it because of hitting certain pressure points. I've been dying for a massage for weeks, but I'll be holding off until December when they'll let me come in.

I got a massage with a woman who specialises in prenatal massages. She only did it very very gently, but I have been in desperate need of relief! She came to the house, which was great, but I know that the place in my village also does prenatal massage for first tri.

woops. I just came back from a long trip and my feet were killing me, so I got a foot message. There was a little back massage at the end (they had me sit and massaged my shoulders). I hope this wasn't harmful to my little appleseed! I guess I'll hold off on more massages until I go to my first appointment at 8 weeks and ask my doc if it's really ok.

Ive got a full body massage booked for when I'll be almost 10 weeks which was a pressie from DH before I was pregnant. I called them to see if I could still had it and they said yes but I'll have to sit up for my back as they won't do anything with me lying on my front which makes sense. I guess they won't do anything around my tummy either.

It's totally harmless but a lot of salons won't do it.

I was wondering this too. I have one booked at the beginning of December- my annual gift to myself- this was before I was pg. I'll only be 8 wks. Do you think I should cancel it and reschedule it for after 12 weeks?

I wouldnt cancel it I would just call them to tell them you are pregnant to make sure that they dont have any issue doing it rather than turning up then finding out they wont. x

Thanks for the quick reply... I was really comtemplating booking one for tomorrow but wasn't sure.

I guess i'll have to go to prenatal certified masseuse... Does regular spa usually have certified prenatal masseuse? or do you guys go to a special place for that?

The spa I went to made sure that I had a certified therapist (I was 10wks) and she did massage on the sides, rather than lying on my tummy -- it was fantastic...

also, get your OH to give you a massage, I get a 1- to 2- minute one every night from my husband....

I went to the baby show here in Toronto and they had a booth for free 10-15 min prenatal massages... greatest booth ever. Find a place that specializes in prenatal massages, they'll massage you while you're laying on your side.

This is something that I have been thinking about too! I am quite a stress head and love massages. They really relax me. i have them at least once a month while ttc and had one done last week which gave me an energy boost. I already have one booked for when i am about 8, 12 and 14 weeks. Having read that most of you guys have done it and are ok I will keep the appointments as I booked before I got my bfp.

Any tips for when you do go?

Back massages are perfectly safe. My OH has given me a back massage almost every night since BFP... No adverse effects, just a back that doesn't hurt so much when I wake up in the morning.

My dr told me it was ok when I asked at only 9 weeks. Most places won't do it until after first tri but my dr said it is safe at any time as long as the therapist is certified to do prenatal. I work at a chiropractor's office and we have 3 massage therapists who work on pregnant ladies all the time. After my ultrasound on Thursday I'm definitely getting a massage!
