Hi all,

Me and OH haven't started trying yet but will be in a couple of months (we had to put it on hold for a few months). I've been thinking about how we will manage financially while i'm on maternity leave as i know this is what worries OH the most. We are both 23 and have full time jobs but are on low incomes (just above minimum wage), we manage ok just the 2 of us but i'm not sure what we'll get when i'm on maternity leave. We wont manage on just my OH wages and the small amount of maternity pay i'll get. Does anyone know what we can get, currently we don't recieve any benefits. I'd appreciate any ideas as i really can't get any help from the directgov website.

Thanks in advance.

You could receive foodstamps which could help or wicked which pays for all your baby milk idk if you have that where your are but I'm pretty sure alot of states and stuff have it good luck

well how we went about is we saved enough money (this took almost 2 years) to enable me to go off work for a year.

i would rather not rely on government handouts as they change all the time.

the moment we saved enough we started trying. it was painful having to wait so long to try but i am feeling certain about the future.

it's a personal choice.

sorry to answer your question

for the first 6 weeks you will get 90% of your salary

33 weeks thereafter you will get either £135.45, or 90 per cent of your average gross weekly earnings whichever is lower.

if you are already receiving benefits you will be entitled to the sure start grant which is £500

Hi, as someone else said maternity pay isn't great but if you know that's what you want you can hopfully be putting something aside until you have to stop work. The benifit system is changing constantly, at the moment there are child and working tax credits to cushion the cut in your hours, I've no idea what will be around next month never mind next year. You could speak to someone at the Citizens advice bureau, or even speaking to you local health visitor, they keep up with all this.

Good luck to you when you decide to try. Oh, and at the risk of sounding a bit naff, kids only cost a fortune if you try to keep up with everyone else.
