So I'm looking for a mattress for the crib. I know I'm gonna be really picky about this, because it can also be a safety measure. I've been told to buy a firm mattress, not a big soft comfortable one, as those often have problems and can lead to breathing issues and whatnot.

I don't know if there's a standard size or not, as it's my first child, and I've done some research but am still worried. The crib we bought said it needs to be at least 27 1/4 inches by 51 and 5/8 inches, and no more than 6 inches thick. I feel really silly freaking out about this, but I don't want to be worried about the safety of my baby at all. So can anyone help me?

The crib we got came with a mattress so we have just kept that one but maybe go into a mothercare or babies r us and ask someone who works there they should be able to show you all your options.

From what I've heard, spring ones are meant to be quite good and quite reasonably priced. The memory foam ones tend to be over priced and don't really have any fantastic benefits which warrant the price. (From what I've been told/read)

Are you having a cot that turns into a junior bed? If so then you need to make sure the matress will be suitable for a toddler too (e.g. a bog standard foam matress might be fine for a baby but not much good for a growing toddler)

Also I know you want to think safety first, but a lot of matress manufacturers will play on this and charge extortionate prices when a cheaper one is probably just as safe and comfortable!

As for sizes ours came with the cot but it did say requires a 400 matress, which I'm guessing is a size guide for cots and matresses on their website. Does yours mention anything like that?

xx
