Well just over 6 weeks to go and still no baby boy names (though we have a couple if it's a girl, which I don't think it is). The main problem is that OH likes no names for a boy, despite me giving him a list of 30 and a 40,001 baby names book to go through. I've posted a couple of polls on here before including some of my favourites (Xander, Fraser, Theo, Stanley etc). Ideally I want a name which isn't too common, and in an ideal world a name which can be shortened to a nickname (as I hate the fact that I can't do this with my name).

So last night I'm watching Top Gun (don't laugh) :haha: and think, hmm, Maverick is a good name. Looked it up on the Office of National Statistics website and only 9 people in the UK registered this name in 2008 (2009 stats not yet released) so not at all common (I do this every time I think of a name to check it's not too high on the list). So what do you all think?

Thats a no from me Im afraid. Think they would need a big personality to live up to that kind of name.

I'm not to keen on Maverick hun sorry, it's whatever you like that matters though hun :D x

I really like it, its very different and im sure when he goes to school, there wont be any other boys with that name xx

It's not a name I'd choose, but it would be a unique name! x

https://www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase/Product.asp?vlnk=15282
then you can download the excel files of boys and girls names from 2008

It's a nice sounding name. I just think that the meaning of the word 'maverick' might mean that people form an opinion of your son before meeting him (https://www.thefreedictionary.com/maverick). It'd be like calling someone Rebel, for example. As someone else said, a big name to live up to. Hope that helps x

I know a lady that had her baby 2 weeks ago and called him Maverick! I say if u like it then go with your own feelings :) xxx

i actually really like it!! OH would definatly go for it too he loves top gun!

I love Maverick, have to say. At the end of the day, if you like it and your partner likes it that's the main thing - I know some very wierdly named kids and they have no issues with their names. Names are so diverse now that I don't really think unusual ones are a problem.

But yeah, total thumbs up..haha!

Oh my word i LOVE it! Its the coolest name i have ever heard and i might just steal it if ever i have a boy! Its definately going to be one of those Marmite names (love it or hate it) but so long as you love it nothing else matters! xxx

I think that if YOU like it, you should name him that.
So often people do name polls on here, and the most popular name is always going to come out on top, just as it would in the national stats. So I guess it really depends on what is more important to you - something socially acceptable or something unique that you really like?

Choose a name you love, and I for one think Maverick is an awesome name

Thank guys! I was a bit worried by all the negatives at the beginning but there were lots of positive responses that rallied at the end!
EmyDra - I agree names are so much more diverse now than when I was a child, especially in big cities like London. I also know some very unusally named children.
Armywife - yes I think most names I like are indeed Marmite names! As I am not keen on very common names at all.
DottyLottie - you're so right, for me something a bit more unique is more important than social acceptability. My name (Clare) was very socially acceptable in the 70s and I have always hated it, can't remember a single moment of my life where I have liked it!

A friend of mine is named Maverick. I didn't think it was his real name for a looong time! lol

If you like it, go for it. If you are worried about the meaning but love the name then maybe it can be a middle name?
