Hellooo ladies

have a question for you :) I have pcos and am ttc conceive with long irregular cycles, my second to last cycle was 49 days and my last one was 53 I think, and now I'm currently on cd22 hoping for a shorter cycle this month but with pcos who knows ! Anyways I'd like to concieve naturally as was lucky enough to with my 6 and 8 year old daughters, however these long cycles are worrying as I'm 32 and dont want babies too late in life sooo I was thinking that if this month is another bfn and possibly next month too, then I may take a trip to the doctors, now my question is...would my doctor put me on metformin straight away due to pcos/irregular cycles or would I be treated the same as someone with a regular cycle and told to try for a year first ?..this is my 5/6 month now, I'd just like a fair shot each month if you know what I mean...thank you so much for reading and hopefully replying....oh before I post this, I did have scan (confirmed pcos) and blood tests were (normal !!??) last year if that helps.....good luck everyone, I so cant wait for a bfp I love my man so much would be a blessing to have his child :cloud9:

xx

Hello! I too have pcos with long cycles.. I had a 160 day cycle!

I would get down to the doctors as soon as you can. They can offer you loads of advice and maybe some help.
It took my doctors surgery a year to finally get me some help. With lots of testing on me and hubby. Today was my first appointment with a fertility specialist.

Although some doctors prescribe metformin straight away. Mine didn't and I finally got it today from the specialist. It all depends how good your doctor is :).

Do you know if you ovulate regularly? Because your doctor could do a blood test to check.

Either way the doctors can only help :)! Good luck and hope you get your bfp soon!

Hi comet ! Thanx so much for your reply :hugs:

sorry to hear you have pcos and long irregular cycles too, I was diagnosed with pcos when I was in my very early 20's with long irregular cycles but somehow still managed to fall pregnant twice naturally at 25 then 6 months after I fell again, only now do I realise how lucky I was !! Hoping for a repeat of history but who knows  sooo at the moment I'm just trying to be patient and keep hoping I'll be lucky again so think I'm going to give it another cycle or two but maybe I'll still ring the docs to get a heads up on what help they will do for me if no bfp by then...

and congratulations on the metformin ! I hope you have quick success ! I've read lots on ladies who are taking metformin and clomid, but what exactly do theses pills do, just help with ovulation ? Or is there more to it than that ? Why do they not give ladies with irregular cycles something to help regulate straight away ? Why the year wait still, doesnt seem fair really

I'm not entirely sure if I ovulate as dont track or temp I'm guessing I do again who knows

was you still ovulating with your long cycles ? Have your cycles improved on any of the meds...hope you dont mind all this questions  I'm just eager to know what may be in store for me

I hope your well, hopefully hear from you soon, thank you x

Hey there I was reading your thread and wondered this myself when we started ttc many years ago. My doctor seemed quite reluctant unless I went through many test and showed I wasn't ovulating on my own each month. Even then he mentioned it has a time limit that it can be used without long term complications like increased risk for ovarian cancer and a bunch of other scary stuff. He said women who ovulate naturally are at risk of hyperstimulation from clomid, which can cause major complications, and can render a woman sterile. He said that's the worst case scenario, but I find it ridiculously scary.

Unsure about metformin but I know it's used to treat insulin resistance which can be associated with pcos so maybe they (doctors) just want to make sure they are medicating you appropriately for what is actually going on and not just shooting fish in a barrel as he said lol. He mentioned that doctors seem to hand out clomid like jelly beans to women with "unexplained infertility".

Either way I hope you get your cycles on track and a sticky bean. Maybe consider charting so you can present you case if you do decide to go the medication route? Doctors (especially specialist like reproductive endocrinologist (that's really what you want fyi) will be grateful you are so informed on your body and have a real feel and history for what's going on. It saves them a lot of testing sometimes!

I agree with panda, charting and tracking ovulation with not only help you pinpoint it but help doctors see what's happening.

Yeah Clomid helps you ovulate properly, but can cause twins (10%) chance I was told. My specialist said you only go on if for a short time because of the associated risks.
Metformin as panda said regulates insulin resistance which I have but not all pcos suffers do. My specialist also said it helps with weight loss when your eating healthy etc.

I started metformin last night so we will have to wait and see and Clomid I start next cycle.

With my long cycles I didn't ovulate each one just once or twice a year, but I didn't know because I was getting fertile cervical mucus and my cervix position was high, soft, open. These aren't accurate ways of telling but I still presumed I was ovulating.

However, this is my ttc journey and its different for everyone. You conceived two children before so your body is doing something perfectly. It never hurts to get checked out when ttc even if your all healthy, saves time in the future :hugs: x
