Hi ladies!

I've been eating a couple of peppermint cremes, looked at the ingredients-and they contain peppermint oil, which apparently is a no-no in pregnancy. I've had a look, and nearly all mints contain it! Is this something we should be avoiding? Or are the quantities in sweets too small?

Thank you!!

I should imagine the amount of oil in a sweet is too small to do any damage.

I wouldn't worry. I've been eating polo mints every day since somebody told me they were good for morning sickness!

oooo never knew this, but sure its only a small amount in sweets and will be fine x

I eat extra strong mints most days & have been craving mint sauce! Oh dear....

I've found this:

Since peppermint has been documented to be toxic in mice, its use in pregnancy is better avoided. It is worth noting however that the dose taken by humans in tea or aromatherapy mix does not come close to that that could cause toxicity.

I've never heard that mint should be avoided. In fact I was told by the pharmacist it was probably safe to take Colpermin for abdominal spasms when pregnant with my first. I haven't this time out of paranoia after the MC, but I've certainly been drinking peppermint tea, and spearmint and chamomile. I can't see the amount in mints or tea being a problem. It's just like fennel or similar is bad in large doses, but "culinary amounts" are fine.

I take peppermint capsules for IBS (and did in my first pregnancy too) and all was fine. I think if you took all the avoid advice you'd never eat or take anything!!

I've been eating mints everyday as they really help with sickness also great for heartburn.
