he has been diagnosed with reflux since he was 3weeks old. He is 15weeks old now and on 5 or 6 bottles a day. I make them all up to 6oz and he will take anywhere between 2 and 5oz. He is sick after all his feeds and projectile after at least 1 a day. Is she right am i overfeeding him? Or is she talking out her bum? She said there is nothing else to help his reflux other than gaviscon, but it obviously isnt working!! Im really upset and im almost in tears writing this. Why wont she help my baby? :( x

also he was born at 36.3 weighing 5lb 12oz and now at 15weeks he weighs 11lb 12oz. X

Sounds to me like she's talking out her bum. I'd try seeing a differnt Dr if possible

I think shes talking out of her bum! At 15 weeks i don't think 6ish bottles of 5oz is overfeeding him at all. I wish i had some good advice hun, can you not get a different doctors opinion? xx

You're Dr sounds like a right arse!!! If you're baby wasn't hungry then he wouldn't take anything. My DD knows when she is and isn't hungry. If I make her a 6oz bottle and 5oz's fills her up then she spits the bottle out by sticking her tongue out. I personally don't see how you can overfeed a baby. Like us they know when they've had enough! I can't believe she would be so unprofessional and so unsupportive!! Have you tried speaking to a HV? They may be able to prescribe something else. My LO has never suffered reflux so I don't know an awful lot about it but I would definitely try talking to a HV or maybe request to see another Dr. Pay no attention to her!!! :hugs:

def talking out her bum. my lo has mild reflux, doc says if gaviscon isnt working she will prescribe me something else, plenty other stuff out there. change doctors. and i dont think what ur lo is having is too much at all. nicole is only 5 wks and will not drink any bottle if shes doesnt want it, usually she will shut her mouth tight or stick her tongue out lol

Yeah, she's full of it. Mika is still sick a lot because of his reflux, but the pain has gone away for him it seems. At that age he was easily taking 8 oz, sometimes more. Your LO knows when he is hungry and will take what he needs.

Hi hun. Ur LO is not even taking the whole 6 ozs. What ur Dr is saying doesnt make any sense! His weight gain seems normal. He only doubled his birth weight. It seems that gaviscon is not working for ur LO hun. Did u try to switching to stay down/anti reflux formula? It worked much better than gaviscon for my LO. I'd suggesting seeing another Dr. as at around 4 mnths his reflux should be abit under control. There r medications for reflux & gaviscon doesnt work for every baby. Hope u can sort it out soon, I know how frustrating it is. xx

thanks everyone. He is on cow and gate comfort because he was getting really constipated, he can still find it hard now with the gaviscon in it so i dont want to change his milk coz he will never poo! My hv said there are other alternatives but i had to speak with my doctor. I just feel really let down which in turn is making me feel im letting my little boy down :'(

also the box says 5 6oz bottles a day for a 2month old! So how am i over feeding him?! He pushes the bottle out when hes had enough. I dont force feed him!! Arghhh!

Your doctor is talking out her ass as far as there being nothing else your LO can take for his reflux. Ranitidine is commonly prescribed, and Omeprizole less commonly.

I don't think you're feeding him too much either, although with reflux babies little and often seems to work better than bigger feeds less often. I don't bottle feed but it still doesn't seem like he's taking too much to me!

he feeds every 3 hours and the odd 4hourly sometimes. Then sleeps 9pm till 6.30am. I cant feed him before hes ready coz he wont suck! He sits there smiling at me with his bottle just sat in his mouth...! I used to really respect my doctor, but after today i dont think i ever want to see her again, she made me feel like i was failing as a mother and couldnt feed him properly :'(

It sounds like you're doing the best you can. It's hard when you lose faith in someone you should be able to trust like that. You shouldn't feel like a bad mum!

Ask to see a different doctor! That's obvious BS, and you shouldn't be made to feel like a bad mother because of her incompetence! Keep doing what you feel is right for your baby, because you'll know better than her, by the sound of things, and get an appointment to see a different doctor as soon as you can! Chin up hun :hugs:

haha my LO does this too! He has silent reflux and typically has 3 ozs every 3 hours and usually 2-3 2oz bottles at night. You are def. not over feeding him, because like my LO.. they will not take it! They just smile at you or mines favorite is to start gagging and coughing!

My pediatrician prescribed ratinidine (sp?) which only helps the stomach acid become milder and wont burn them as much. Unfortunately it doesnt help with the spit up :nope: Does your LO seem upset when he spits up? If not he might just be a spitty baby and should out grow it.:hugs:

I know i'm going to get called all sorts of name...but that is overfeeding, even a baby with reflux doesn't projectile vomit daily. 6 onces is a bit much..He should be taking 4 at the most...and of course he'll take it because some babies do not know when to stop eating..Constant vomiting is a big sign of being over fed

The OP says she makes them 6 ozs but he only takes anywhere from 2 to 5ozs.

Bathbabe- I know everyone suggest this and you probably already do this but do burp frequently if he sounds like he is taking in a lot of air, I have noticed Nolan gets really spitty if I dont. Nolan has issues where sometimes he takes bottle wonderfully.. and other times when he seems to struggle sucking and gagging.. so when he is having a "bad" feed I burp him a lot and it seems to help.

They can, depending on how severe the reflux is, especially if it's GERD, but if that were the case I would hope the doctor would have picked up on it by now.

To the OP, have you eliminated the possibility of it being a dairy/lactose intolerance that may be contributing to the symptoms?

I do burp him frequently, he isnt very good at bringing up his wind so it takes ages. For example... I once burped him for nearly an hour and nothing, then i put him down to go grab a drink and he was then just sick everywhere. So i know its important to burp him xxx
