My IUI Journey

Hi everyone, I'm starting IUI #1 this cycle . I've been reading a lot of blogs and forums and watching a lot of youtube videos to help understand this whole process, and I still feel like there's so much uncertainty. Maybe many of you can relate.

I'm 31 and DH is 35. We've been TTC since we got married in December of 2014. In May, we decided to go to the doctor to make sure everything is ok. That's when we found out DH had a low sperm count and low motility. Also, I may or may not have PCOS (borderline). DH didn't take it too well, his brother and sister both in their 30s have 4 kids each and he just never thought it wouldn't be easy to have his own soccer team. The next month was an emotional time for us both and included lots of doctor visits, some of them for the purpose of getting a second opinion.

So the fertility specialist we chose has been urging us to go straight to IVF, but due to the drastic cost difference and some encouragement from DH's urologist we decided to try a round of IUI first, and this is where we are today. 9/23 was CD 1, I started follistim injections CD3. Today is CD6 and I had 20+ follicles on my right ovary and 15 on my left, non dominant. The nurse said that was "a lot", the doctor wasn't concerned enough to change anything.

I understand that statistically speaking this first round will not result in success, but sometimes I worry about DH being too hopeful.

Hi Amma,

First, I want to say good luck with your IUI cycle, FX you get a sticky bean! I am just waiting for insurance approval to begin my first injectable cycle. DH and I have unexplained infertility....Structurally we are all fine, for some reason I never get a period and I never ovulate....We opted for timed intercourse for this first cycle, because theoretically if they can get me to ovulate we have just as much chance as any other "healthy" couple TTC. They did offer IUI to us though. From my understanding, you can have a lot of follies, but not that many matured eggs...so if the doctor wasn't concerned with that many follies...I would try not to be as well (I know, easier said than done!)...maybe he was trying to pay you a compliment that he has all these follies to work with! I think with IUI they usually like to see around 2-4 matured eggs, but all it takes is one! Good luck, I wish you well!

I just want to say good luck Amma! I'm hoping to have my first IUI cycle in a few weeks, so I'd love to follow along and hear your updates. =)

Thankfully our insurance paid for the injections and that was a huge help, however that was all the insurance is paying for we have to pay for the actual procedure. You're exactly right about the follicles, and also quantity doesn't equAl quality.

Thank you for sharing your story with me, keep us updated !

Keep us updated. I would love to follow your journey. I go for my CD 8 ultrasound and blood work tomorrow and I'll post an update on this thread when I get the results !

So my CD8 ultrasound and blood work was relatively uneventful and boring. Most prominent follicle a little under 7 on each ovary. The doctor decided to up the follistem injection from 75 IU to 112.5 and I go back Friday. The nurse said in her estimate it might be 7-10 days before the IUI. I'm a little disappointed because I was hoping to attend this big annual conference in my professional field that weekend of the 10th which i would have to travel for and now that's looking unlikely. That's life I guess !

So I've noticed I've been quiet bloated and feeling heavier since starting the injections. I've been watching what I eat hoping to lose the extra 30 pounds I have before getting pregnant. In fact I loss 10 pounds last month, but this morning the scale was up 1.5 lbs.

UGHHH this weight gain, another pound!!! I've been generally watching the carbs (ok I ate 1 and a half tortillas), eating small meals every 2 hours, drinking lots of water, and I'm still gained :(

I'm still in 112.5 IU Follistim. Today was CD 10,my biggest follicle was 9mm, so it doesn't look like I'll have an IUI before CD14, which totally messes up my schedule and will get in the way of attending some functions but that's life I guess.
